This is my first time to join a national Toastmaster convention.
And I have something to say about the speech contest judging system.
Basically, I found it pretty different from a formal contest. Usually, before
the speakers go on stage, there is time to introduce the judges, telling us
their backgrounds and so on. Did we hear anything about them? No. Second, the
the percentage of scoring should be clearly revealed, like how many percentage
will come from content, how many from expression, etc. Did the convention
reveal that to the audience? No. It's like they don't want us to know anything
about how the judging process goes! Could we possibly not start questioning
about the fairness of this contest? I think the answer is clear. I just hope
that the future contests will include the essential transparency in the whole
judging process, so that we can truly believe in the justice of the contest.
