Intonation? This is not as serious as the title. I am going to talk about a very tiny aspect of making music in places like NTU band (perhaps you can say this is not music yet!). But this may reflect a direction that we, the poor amateur musicians who struggle to enjoy some music, can work on. While I was in NTU and playing with my friends in NTU band, that was wonderful. la la la ...... There was always one question in my mind: when can we stop that one-by-one type tunning process before each rehearsal? We should be able to do the tunning by ourself. So, it should take only 2 minutes to do the tunning for the whole band. What does it mean when everyone can do the tuinning by her/him-self? Everyone has two reliable ears, actually, perhaps one is enough. The truth was we were not good enough to do that. We liked to play some music and would like to improve ourselves, could not do this very simple thing. I think that was not our fault. That's the result of very bad beginner education for windplayers in Taiwan. The NTU orchestra at my time was doing that, as their "tradition", I guess. But their intonation was ...... If there is a day that you guys can do it. That should be considered as a very important improvement, and you definitely are pushing the group that you love to the "next" level. It will be great.
