Intonation?
This is not as serious as the title. I am
going to talk about a very tiny aspect of making
music in places like NTU band (perhaps you can
say this is not music yet!). But this may
reflect a direction that we, the poor amateur musicians
who struggle to enjoy some music, can work on.
While I was in NTU and playing with my friends in NTU band,
that was wonderful. la la la ...... There was always one
question in my mind: when can we stop that one-by-one
type tunning process before each rehearsal? We should be
able to do the tunning by ourself. So, it should take only
2 minutes to do the tunning for the whole band.
What does it mean when everyone can do the tuinning by
her/him-self? Everyone has two reliable ears, actually,
perhaps one is enough.
The truth was we were not good enough to do that.
We liked to play some music and would like to improve
ourselves, could not do this very simple thing.
I think that was not our fault. That's the result of
very bad beginner education for windplayers in Taiwan.
The NTU orchestra at my time was doing that, as their
"tradition", I guess. But their intonation was ......
If there is a day that you guys can do it. That
should be considered as a very important improvement,
and you definitely are pushing the group that you
love to the "next" level. It will
be great. I will salute to you guys.
