I forgot that you are a freshman. I apologize here becaue my response
was very emotional. Let me tell you a couple of things that make me
emotional.
A guy in NTU said that Vienna Phil. plays with pure intonation and
Chicago Symphony Orch plays with tempered scale. Now, anyone can tell
me who play a Beethoven piano concerto in pure intonation? I did not
say the 2nd Viennese guys at all, I just mentioned a classical example.
I was so angry at the moment when a friend of mine tell me this story.
You play clarinet, right? A couple years ago Karl Leister came to
Taipei and played both clarinet sonatas of Brahms. Another guy in NTU
(not in this band) attended the concert and was not paying attention to
the performance during the concert, he just read a novel or something,
at the end of the concert, he said "Leister has great technique, but
his music is just not good enough.". Please teach me some clarinet here,
what is a show piece in that concert? A Brahms sonata? Why did that boy
comment on Leister that way?
What you feel about our conductor is not a crime. I should not
get so emotional to you. If the atmosphere is always not good during
the rehearsals, it is not your fault becuase it was bad when you join
this band. If the atmosphere has been bad for 7-8 years, then it is
not your guys' fault. It is probably my fault.
It is not so important to find who is responsible for that. If
people want to learn things from the conductor. They can make up
their mind and they will learn some things right from next week.
The question of how to run a band and make it a good one is very
complicated and I should not join a discussion like that. I got emotional
and now apologize here. I will hold my fire next time.
