Everyone in NTU is learning. Perhaps a positive attitude is very
helpful.
If you can barely play the notes in a piece like Holst 1st suite,
you already enjoy the music in some sense because try to play music is
different from just listen to performances.
Now the "different generation" part. There is NO great tradition for
this band AT ALL because people stay for 4 years and leave, this place should
not be the center of anyone's life. It makes no sense to compare
10 years or 5 years ago to the members today. People come here to
find friends and try to make some music, not to compare with "history".
If you would like to enjoy the music of Holst more than you did while
you were in high schools, then practice and use your brains (carefully)
can help a lot. If you pay a little more attention, you can find a lot
more things to enjoy. It will not help if you compare to the old NTU
guys. They are not masters, it makes no sense to "defeat" them or
worship them.
