I know you heard it from another person. But this does
not make sense to me. I think the conductor is (about)
one beat ahead of the band or orchestra because that
is how (s)he communicate with the band (orchestra).
The point is, to my knowledge, a sudden change of the
tempo by the conductor implies a sudden change of
tempo in the following beat. To conduct accel.,
as far as my poor brain understands, the conductor
does accel., not sudden change of tempo.
Please consider the above a friendly response. No
offense at all. I know very little about conducting.
