The music "I could have danced all night" is one of the "New
sound in brass" series. I played many pieces of that series, like
"Brazil", "I could have danced all night", "New York, New York", etc.
Those are band arrangement of very famous beautiful tunes.
Somehow, I believe those pieces were played very far from appropriate
in all the wind ensembles which I have played. They were simply interpreted
as "hot", "popular" pieces and my friends and I were simply making very
edgy, big sound while playing them. We did not excute the Cha-cha, or
Dixieland, or any other style of music with our brain.
That made those ensembles cheap "na-ka-shi" bands.
Anyway, nobody were interested in listening to what
other people were doing (really like playing 3-D), we just blow our horns hard.
I don't really like "New sound in brass" series, not because they are
not "classical" (in a loose sense), but because I don't like their arrangement.
However, I do believe a careful approach to those pieces can make them
much more musical. By being more careful, we can enjoy a lot more from
those tunes, too.
Perhaps you guys are doing it much better now.
