I started writing things here because Tony (EastEvil) suggested me to write some things I had heard from a seminar on clarinet acoustics. However,I wrote only 4 or 5 articles on clarinet acoutics here. It is far less than I though I would. Somehow I feel not want to write only on acoustics (afraid that people think I know only acoustics?), then I wrote a lot more on other subjects. Perhaps I will write one or two more short articles on acoustics then quit because I cannot write long articles (nobody likes to read long articles, including me). It is possible that I will shift direction and try to organize some ideas that I have read from the "klarinet list". Those are more general and may be interesting for more people in this band. By the way, is there any clarinet player on that "klarinet list"? As a bonus, let me tell you a story on using one's brain in a wrong way. I played an Overture of Rossini (Barber...) in high school band. The band director invited another teacher to teach the woodwind section for an afternoon because we would play that piece in a competition. Let me call him Mr.A for simplicity. 'The "f" (forte) is different when you are playing different composor's work.', Mr. A said. 'In Rossini's time you should not play it too loud because .......' Then the most interesting part happened, he said 'While playing Beethoven's music, one should play "f" much louder than other composers becase Beethoven is deaf.' This kind of thing happened again and again in my life, not only while playing instrument, but also in the conversations between physicists on science. I am perfectly all right with mistakes. But I cannot accept ridiculous "fantasies". I beg you guys read that statement on Beethoven again and (please) find it ridiculous, nonsense, and also a humilation to a composer with great brain. Of course, please find the correct reason why Mr. A was absolutely wrong. Accepting the fact that I am an amateur clarinetist. I live with all the mistakes that I made, make, or will make during all performances or rehearsals. However, I won't allow myself to be a no-brainer while opening my mouth and speak on music (sorry that I cannot say "did not allow...").
