Paul Meyer is a great clarinet player. I feel his choice of tempi in many fast movements too fast (for me). I like his effective use of vibrato. Tony knows this piece better than I do. I like that horn trio. The problem of that piece for me is the balance of timbre. If the violin is very bright and the horn is very dark, it does not sound right to me. Also the modern grand piano is another BIG difference compare to the piano in Brahms' time. Clarinet trio is easier to play with better balance, I guess. However, the sound of A clarinet can be "bright" compare to that of a cello. Anyway, listening to this piece is a real pleasure. The 2nd and 3rd mov. are my favorites. Basset horn is an interesting creature. I have never had a chance to play one. It is said that this thing is hard to play. Also acoustically unstable (that's why it is hard to play). I heard that Buffet "improved" the acoustics of basset horn to make it stable. But I also heard this improved thing should be called alto clarinet in F, it's got the characters of an alto clarinet, not those of a basset horn anymore.
