There is a popular exercise for new clarinet students: only play the
(mouth piece + barrel) combination, not the whole clarinet. Some teachers
believe this is the foundamental exercise one should do before playing
the "real" instrument.
One day I got curious, inserted one finger into the barrel while playing
this "top two sections" game. The idea is to change the pitch by
sliding the finger in the barrel, then I can play these two sections
like play a trombone.------- The suprising result is that the more you
insert your finger into the barrel, the more the pitch drops. Opposite
to what one may have thought.------ Actually by inserting a finger into
the barrel, you have changed the radius of the bore, not the length of
the bore, that's the key.

Another way to get an A clarinet: put a string in the bore of a Bb clarinet.
By doing so you also lower the pitch, then you experimenting with different
strings to see if you can lower the pitch by a semitone!
Who has done this before? At least two clarinet professors in USA and
Antony Pay claimed they have done so either for fun or for practical reasons.
C.
There is a way to play a scale on a clarinet without moving your fingers.
Just half-cover all the tone holes by your fingers, then use your mouth to
adjust the pitch. You may be able to play some easy melody! Of course,
if you are lazy, just slide your fingers, you are playing the famous
solo in "Rhapsody in blue".
D.
Why do we do experiments? Those "traditional" "classical" players don't
do so!
Well, there is no user's manual when you by a clarinet, is there? When
you have a clarinet on your hands, there are infinite possibilities that
you can get out from it. You should be "classical" while having a piece
of Weber's music in front of you. But you are playing something which is
200 years old then. When you are thinking of being yourself, and have
no "Mozart" or "Brahms" in front of you, then your clarinet can scream,
or cry, because your do what you want, and that is why music is so
fasinating.
