"Brahms wrote all his horn parts for the natural horn because
he wanted his music to be imbued with the different shades of
covered and open notes, but it was not always easy to persuade
players not to use their recently-developed valve and instruments.
Brahms' preference for the hand horn is respected here as he knew
and chose between the valve and natural horns. The slow movement,
especially, benefits from being played on the natural horn: it
was written to express Brahms' grief at the recent death of his
mother and the darker tone of the stopped notes matches the mood
well."
