Candide is not easy to assign to any of the recognised categories of music
theatre, but Bernstein himself called it a "comic operetta". Is is based on
Voltaire's satirical novel of the same title, published in 1759, about
young Candide, who travels with his lover Cun穣onde through "the best of all
possible worlds", experiencing all manner of catastrophes and crimes, and
returns home disillusioned.
The first version of Candide with a libretto by the dramatist Lillian
Hellman and lyrics by Richard Wilbur, John LaTouche and Dorothy Parker was
produced in 1956 and disappeared from the repertoire after only 73
performances. The revised 1973 version with a new libretto by Hugh Wheeler
and additional lyrics, and orchestrated for 13 player was much more
successful, receiving 740 performances. However, the overture to this work,
large portions of which parody the music of Offenbach and Gilbert & Sullivan
operettas, enjoyed great popularity from the outset and quickly became an
attractive item in orchestral concerts. It was first performed at a concert
on January 26, 1957 by the New York Philharmonic conducted by the composer.
The opening fanfare, linked with Westphalia, the home of Candide and
Cun穣onde, is immedeately followed by bravura battle music and succeeded in
turn by a lyrical passage from Candide and Cun穣onde's duet "Oh Happy We".
After a shortened repeat of this material with different orchestration
there is an excerpt from Cun穣onde's aria "Glitter and Be Gay"; the overture
concludes with a short recapitulation of the motifs from the earlier themes.
