Samuel Barber's well-known elegiac sound-portrait, Adagio for Strings,
arranged for string orchestra from Barber's String Quartet, Op.11 of 1936,
owes much to conductors such as Toscanini, Stokowski, and Bernstein,
(都是大ㄎㄚ喔) who brought it to audiences that might never have heard
the work in its original form. The mood of this piece is best expressed in
a thought of George Santayana's: (你沒看錯, 就是這個名字, 這可是本尊喔)
"Thus divine beauty is evident, fugitive, impalpable, (文謅謅的用詞...)
and homeless in a world of material fact; yet it is unmistakably individual
and sufficient unto itself, and although perhaps soon eclipses, is never
really extinguished: for it visits time and belongs to eternity."
