Prelude (From Beethoven to NTUWindBand) Different ideas exist in this world. When I asked why some conductors did not follow the repeat in the 2nd mov. of Beethoven symphony #1 (see story(II) for more details) , I was not going to give an answer because (I think) this subject is "better" not to be answered with definite answer. Of course we all find an explanation from Santayana who put it in a very simple way and he considered there is no big deal to repeat or not. And I did not agree..... There are different thoughts in this world. The tempo (metronome marks) put by Beethoven in his symphonies are not respected by most conductors, either. I heard one suggestion about slowing down the tempo on the internet:"Beethoven is deaf". That sounds ridiculous to me. Perhaps, PERHAPS, the interpretors (performers) "find" more freedom after the composer's death. So, we can hear many very personalized interpretations in the earlier music. Another possibility is that, the composer himself may not be very restrictive about his marks....... I am going to tell a story which is related to NTUWindBand. Speaking too much about Beethoven may make people bored. We play Beethoven in NTUSympOrch, not here, I guess. The two guys in the story are Mr. Cheng and me. Mr. Cheng is, perhaps known by all of you, a trombone player and now a pretty well-known band teacher, also was a close friend of mine when we were both in NTU. We took different opinions on two occasions. But, alas! None of us were consistent. We did not make our decisions base on any "principle", perhaps. Human beings are self-contradicting. And more, the composers I will talk about are still alive. One of them is Alfred Reed. That may sound more close to us than Beethoven.
