More questions: for clarinet players only, perhaps
A friend of mine with "the signature" X (3 years older
than I am) is a strong supporter of Brahms. His clarinet
sonatas, quintet, and trio are of course X's favorites.
On the other hand, X really
overlooked the clarinet works of Weber. He considered
Weber's works on clarinet as "scale studies".
Of course the above is history. X's opinion towards
Weber in 1999 is not available because I am not able
to find him.
Yesterday Shu-Ting Chen told me "I don't
understand why I never liked Weber before."
I guess for clarinet players, the clarinet works of
Mozart are "the stuff". His clarinet concerto is arguably
the greatest woodwind concerto every written (quote from
Jack Brymer, and I agree).
I wonder how clarinet players in NTU think about Weber.
Of course I would like to know how horn players think about
Mozart and Richard Strauss, and how people like Alfred Reed,
too. But let me concentrate on Weber first. Just for fun,
or curious.
