Please read my "easy and live longer", then you may understand
the following description of a symphony.
※ 引述《Suskind (boilermaker)》之銘言:
: Usually, (in classical period) a symphony or sonata is:
: 1st movement -- sonata form
: middle movements -- ternary form (for example, minuet)
: finale -- can be sonata form or else, like rondo
Yes, we "cheated". I choose to cheat because I don't want to get into
the question of "what is sonata form?".
The quoted description works as long as you do not really "measure"
the meaning of "sonata form" to better precision. You live with the above
description and listen to music and feel happy. You can consider that
description as a "frame", not a fluid style.
I was not going to talk about sonata form while writing "story(II)" and
we would like to get through it quickly.
Now to a better precision. Sonata form is not a frame (imagine
minuet if you like). It was evolving with time, as a flowing object.
Beethoven choose to repeat with a reason that fits the history. The
audience in the late 19th century and 20th century may get bored while
listening to that repeat. Not the audience in 1800 when he composed
his first symphony. Beethoven is no stupid. Nor did he stick with
one method all the time.
Almost all music written by mature Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven are
"sonata forms" in a sense. The scherzo and minuet acquired development and
recapitulation, so did slow movements. The first movements of Mozart
piano concerti are said to be some "aria form" by Tovey. However,
if we check some Mozart's opera, it's influenced by the
practice of sonata form as well.
You want the detail? I didn't want to get into the detail so I cheat.
It could be an easy way out when I would like to talk about a story only.
However, not this time.
So, that 2nd movement is written in sonata form, that is a general
practice of Beethoven. So we can label "sonata form" on many other
pieces of music in that period, too.
I failed to cheat this time because there is a careful musician.
Perhaps now everyone knows a little more except him, and that is good.
Hopefully my little story is still as "little" as I would like it
to be. To repeat or not to repeat, that is no so simple. Of course,
I hope this can be the last sentence from me in this thread.
