A little experience in America. It's almost impossible that each person
in the audience knows when he/she is supposed to applaud. I think every
orchestra more or less experiences this kind of situation. As long as it
doesn't disturb the performance and doesn't happen during the music (of
course I mean the classical music.) that should be fine.
Some people's (I mean music professional)
philosophy is that the concert hall is not a church. You applaud as long as
you feel the atmosphere is right. Litsening to music is to have fun, not to
take a class or something. Of course it is great to teach kids the basic
structure of a symphony and the basic (traditional?) behavior during a
classical concert. But don't expect you can find an audience behaving
like you expected.
