[5.1] What is the International Trombone Association (ITA)?
See the ITA's Web site for complete details
<http://www.niu.edu/acad/music/ita/>.
The following is taken from the ITA Web site
<http://www.niu.edu/acad/music/ita/constitution.html>.
The general purposes of the Association shall be: to promote
communications among trombonists around the world; to improve
the artistic level of performance, teaching, and literature
associated with the trombone family; and to function as a
clearing house for trombone related ideas and information.
The following is taken from the President's Welcome at the
ITA Web site <http://www.niu.edu/acad/music/ita/index.html>.
Connecting people with mutual interests over borders,
nations and continents is one of the most exciting
aspects of modern technology. As the first non-American
president of the International Trombone Association (ITA)
I proudly welcome you to our official World Wide Web page.
Our motto "Dedicated to the advancement of trombone
teaching, performance and literature" - together with our
quarterly magazine, the ITA Journal, - is now transported
in the best possible way, carrying all sorts of valuable
information worldwide to interested people, who are either
already members of ITA or will be in due time. At this time
we count 4,200 members all over the world and there are
affiliated societies in Great Britain (Don Lusher, president),
Finland (Petri Aarnio, president), Germany (Ben van Dyk,
president) and France (Guy Destanque, president). Others
are in the process of joining....
[5.2] What is the International Trombone Festival?
The following is taken from the ITA (see question [5.1])
Web site <http://www.niu.edu/acad/music/ita/itf.html>.
The ITA sponsors an annual week-long workshop called the
International Trombone Festival. This is an important event
in the trombone world. Each festival features excellent
performances by trombonists from all genres of music, master
classes taught by the world's best trombone pedagogues,
premieres of important new works for the trombone,
presentations of trombone related research, and ample
opportunity for all attendees to play in trombone groups of
any size.
All are welcome! International Trombone Festival attendance
always exhibits a highly varied range of backgrounds:
professionals (symphonic, jazz, free lance), college
teachers, K-12 teachers, students from all levels,
and "Weekend Warriors".
The 26th annual International Trombone Festival
<http://www.conted.ceps.uiuc.edu/ci/trombone/> was

Boulder Travel has been designated as the official travel

are stressed through daily trombone choir and quartet rehearsals.
Master classes and technique classes are included daily. (Grades
7-9; student must have completed school grade 6.)
Senior Trombone Camp
Instruction focuses on strengthening of fundamentals through
daily master classes and technique classes. Ensemble skills and
musicianship are stressed during daily quartet and large trombone
choir rehearsals. (Grades 10-12; student must have completed
school grade 9.)
Who Should Apply
ISYM camps are open to junior and senior high school students; most
students should have completed the sixth grade prior to
camp attendance. It is of the utmost importance to maintain musical
balance in ISYM ensembles. Because of this, enrollment is
limited in certain camps.
Application/Music History Form
All students must complete an Application/Music History Form for
the camp of their choice. This is accomplished with the
assistance of public school teachers or private teachers.
Information submitted will assist our coordinators in
evaluating students for acceptance to the camp.
Application Procedure
Application/Music History Forms may be submitted to Illinois
Summer Youth Music after January 1, 1998. These forms will be
processed in the order received. An ISYM Health Form, which is
sent to accepted campers, must be filled out and either
returned to ISYM by mail or delivered by the student to us at
First Day Registration to complete a camper's enrollment.
Notification of acceptance or non-acceptance for the camp
will be by letter. Final instructions, a map, Placement Audition
information and excerpts, and schedule of reporting times for
First Day Registration July 19 will be sent to each camper.
Application Fee
A $40 fee, which covers administrative costs of processing
applications, must accompany the Application/Music History
Form. This fee will be credited to the cost of the camp if
the applicant is accepted. If an applicant is not accepted
by ISYM, the application fee will be refunded. There will be
no refund of this application fee for any other reason.
Camp Fees
RESIDENT: Anyone attending the camp who lives in the dormitory;
price includes all meals, housing and instruction.
COMMUTER: Anyone attending the camp who does not live in the
dormitory;
price includes instructional costs but does not
include meals or housing. Meal tickets may be purchased
directly from the housing division if a commuting student
chooses to eat in the dorm.
Resident (7 days) - $369 (US)
Commuter (7 days) - $199 (US)
Payment of Fees
Students and/or scholarship groups may pay the balance
due before the camp begins, or students may bring
scholarship checks and final parent payments for First
Day Registration.
Placement Audition
A Placement Audition as part of First Day Registration will
be given within an organization or camp when the student
arrives at ISYM.
Summary
Each camp has its own faculty of specialists. Each course of
study has its own curriculum designed to meet the needs of
those students enrolled. The beginning (very young or
inexperienced) student should not enroll in the ISYM program.
It is assumed that each enrollee can perform with reasonable
facility comparable to other students at his/her age level.
Illinois Summer Youth Music is sponsored by the Continuing
Education and Public Service division of the School of Music
at the University of Illinois, in cooperation with the UIUC
Office of Continuing Education and Public Service.

[5.7] What are some trombone related summer music camps?
On Sat, 1 Nov 1997 06:46:01, Byron Siegal <JazVermont@aol.com>
wrote the following in the message entitled "Fwd: Band Camp For
Grownups: PREregistration--Save $$":
Jazz Vermont the 5 1/2 day band camp dedicated to the music
of Kenton, Gillespie, Basie, Marsalis, and more announces its
1998 preregistration. The dates for 1998 are July 19-24th at
the Stratton Mountain Inn in Stratton, VT. Join one of our
four bands. Rehearsals and workshops run all day long. End
of week performance for the public.
Each year 70% of the participants return and as a result
some instrument categories get tight early so its a good
idea to preregister now. Preregistration deposits are
refundable upon request prior to April 15, 1998. So if you
Think you might want to come, you can reserve now and if
something comes up cancel later. Preregistration saves you
10% on the price of the camp.
Special offer for First-Time Trombone, Bass or electric Bass,
and Guitar players: (Reg. $1379.00 Special Offer-$999.00).
For further information send us your snail mail address and
we'll forward a brochure or visit our website.

P.S. One of our participants said last summer when awarding
a gift from the band members to the director of the Wentworth
Wonder Band, "It isn't often in our day to day life that we
experience joy. This entire week has been a joyful experience,
I'll be back next year!"
[5.8] What is the Australian Trombone Association (ATA)?
The following is quoted from the ATAs Web page
<http://www.powerup.com.au/~ata/>:
The International Trombone Association is a non-profit
organisation comprising approximately 2,296 members in
45 countries. The Australian Chapter of the International
Trombone Association (ITA) was formed in 1973. Since that time,
ITA Australia has held many national seminars and one
International Symposium in Brisbane in 1988. This international
event represents the first time an Australian instrumental
group has organised an event of this magnitude.
The Associations aims include the promotion of the trombone
and the education of trombone players, teachers and listeners to
develop the awareness of the instrument as well as it's
enjoyment and its ongoing development.
The main point of contact between the association and
its members is the magazine ATEM (Australian Trombone
Education Magazine) which is published quarterly and sent to
all members.
