[7.4] What music exists for trombone and soprano voice?
On Sun Jun 16 03:49:30 1996, Arthur C. Jennings
<tboner@nervm.nerdc.ufl.edu> wrote the following in the
message entitled "Music for Trb and Soprano":
(NEED PERMISSION!!!!!!!!!!)
...
*Alto trombone and soprano*
1. Johann Ernst Eberlin: "Arie der Tocter Zion: 'Fliess O
Heisser Trenenbach'" w/ 2 vlns, vla, bass. In
"The Baroque Trombone in chamber Music, vol. 1 (Virgo)
2. Johann Joseph Fux: "Alma Redemptoris Mater" w/ 2 vlns,
cont. (Kagarice Editions)
3. Antonio Caldara: "Dovunque il guardo" from _La passione
di Gesu Christo Signor nostro_. w/ continuo.
(Garland Publishing Co. - see note below)
*Tenor Trombone and Soprano*
4. Joseph I: "Alme Ingrate" w/ continuo (see note below)
5. John Bavicchi: "Fragments from 'Vega'" w/ percussion.
(BKJ publications)
6. M. Kowalski: "Hors D'Oeuvres" (Smith Publications)
7. Robert Ceely: "Lullaby" (American Composers Alliance)
*Bass Trombone and Soprano*
8. Marshall Bialosky: "Two Songs for Soprano Voice and
Bass Trombone (Seesaw)
9. Karl Kroeger: "Tres Psalmi Davidis"
(American Composers Alliance)
10. Paul Pisk: "Three Songs" w/ piano (Touch of Brass)
NOTES:
3. No performance edition of the Caldara is available -
parts will need to be copied and continuo part realized
- worth the effort.
4. The Lindberg edition of "Alme Ingrate" is transposed
to Ab from C, moving the original tenor trb. up a
min. 6th to the alto range and the soprano down a
maj. 3rd to the mezzo range. Original version can be found
in "Musicalische Werke der Kaiser Ferdinand III, Leopold
I and Joseph I" vol. 2 (Vienna 1893). There are no
published performance editions in the original key that
I know of, but some unpublished ones are floating around.
I got one from Hinterbichler at Univ.New Mexico a few
years ago.
5. Bavicchi: avant garde (written for Tom Plsek), very
difficult, physically demanding - fast, loud disjunct
16ths, quarter tones, multiphonics, 1 percussionist plays
lots of instruments. Text is 70ish psychobabble.
6. Kowalski: avant garde (written for Jon English in 1974)
spatial notation, moderately difficult (not virtuosic),
multi-lingual, surrealist-food related text, trombonist
speaks occasionally, sop. plays triangle or claves a few
times.
8. Bialosky: will work with tenor w/ f-attach. but more
sonorous sound of bass may be better. Needs a soprano
with a dramatic flair. Texts are two poems by
Howard Nemerov: 1. The Quarry 2. The Dragonfly
9. Kroeger: works with tenor w/ f-attach.
7. and 9. Ceely and Kroeger available only from
American Composers Alliance (212) 362-8900
fax: (212) 362-8902

[7.6] What is Band in a Box?
On Wed Apr 2 02:48:05 1997, Wayne Dyess <txtbone@earthlink.net>
wrote the following in the message entitled "Re: Band-in-a-Box,
Jammer, MiBAC Jazz":
Band-in-a-Box, like its name implies, is an automatic
accompaniment computer program available for IBM, Macintosh,
and Atari computer platforms. As noted, the basic program has
a list price of $88 (U.S.), but the street price is
considerably less. I don't think you will find it any
cheaper than the price Eric mentioned. However, this is
the basic package (called the "Pro" pak). There are better
options for the first-time user. I would suggest buying the
ultrapak if you can afford the extra cost. You won't regret
it. And once you have the program, you'll be hooked and
want the added expansion you get from the extra disks.
Here are your options (prices may change, and are in U.S.
dollars):
----------------------------------
1) Pro Pak ............ $88.00 list
includes version 7, 3 styles disks, 1 harmonies disk,
and 1 soloists disk
2) Super Pak ....... $ 147.00 list
includes version 7, 5 styles disks, 1 harmonies disk,
and 1 soloists disk
3) Ultra Pak ........ $ 189.00 list
includes version 7, 8 styles disks, 1 harmonies disk,
and 1 soloists disk
The more styles you have, the more flexibility you will have.
If you are only interested in using the program for fake
book and jazz improvisational help, then the basic Pro Pak
will do just fine. On the other hand, if you want
contemporary Christian, rock, pop, Latin, country, and a
host of other styles, you'll want to go with the Ultra Pak.
Demo's (including non-midi) may be downloaded at the following
site: <http://www.pgmusic.com/demo.htm>
To access the Band-in-a-Box & PG Music homepage, delete
"/demo.htm". PG Music has provided a very comprehensive site,
complete with the demo versions, upgrades, general
information, and much more.
If you already own BIAB, then you will certainly want to visit
this site: <http://www.healey.com.au/~gsrath/biab.htm>
There are plenty of songs (all styles) and a few user
(amateur) styles available at the above site.
I highly recommend Band-in-a-Box. Even after years of playing
and having purchased some dozen or more of the Jamie Aebersold
play-along recordings, Band-in-a-Box is FUN to use and
educational to boot. A good sound card is an advantage for
IBM types, and a tone generator (like Roland's Sound Canvas)
is a must for Mac users.
The other part of your question dealt with "is anything
better"?
No. Not in my opinion.
[7.7] How can I use Band in a Box?
On Wed Apr 2 23:51:23 1997, Eliezer Aharoni
<eanogmus@netvision.net.il> wrote the following in the message
entitled "Re: Band In A Box - improve jazz reading skills.":
As I see much interest in Band in the Box, I'd like to share
with you my experience that Band in the Box can be used not
only as an improvisational environment, but also as an aid
to improve jazz reading skills: Type in the progressions,
or used the BIAB fakebook files if you can find
them (they had a 500 file - no melody version - with version
3, and a smaller version with melody with version 4.
Since version 5 they have been discontinued).
Take a fakebook - treble or bass clef - pick up a tune that
exist in the BIAB files.
Set to a convenient tempo.
Run the song and first - sing along (don't play yet) with
the playback. Or more effective - get a kazoo and
blow the tune along with playback. (Kazoo simulates the
playing much more than singing.)
Increase speed gradually.
After playing the tune fast, you can slow down a bit,
and repeat the process, doing simulated slide positions
with your right hand. When comfort with this stage, take
the horn and play along (you can take tempo down a bit).
It works greatly, especially with complicated bop tunes!!!
This way you train your eyes and mind to flow fast,
instrumental skills will follow.
The newest version has an arrangement generator, that arranges
the melody in harmony combinations and styles.
If you put the melody on, pick a multivoice combination
(like: trombone quartet, supersax, big band etc.),
when you play along it gives you a strong feel of section
playing and enhances accuracy of playing....

[7.11] What are some recommended trombone / low brass recordings?
On Mon, 12 Jan 1998 16:10:24, Douglas Yeo <yeo@yeodoug.com>
wrote the following in the message entitled,
"Re: Classical Recording Recommendations":
...
As to orchestra recordings that feature trombone and
are highly recommendable, you might want to check out a
new book, "Orchestral Recordings for Low Brass Players"
by Gerald Sloan (published by Encore Music Publishers
- PO Box 786, Troy, MI 48099-0786, 800/261-5676 [fax or voice]).
The book grew out of a survey of dozens of professional
trombone and tuba players who were asked to make
recommendations of their favorite recordings that specifically
featured commendable trombone playing. Among the 45+ trombonists
who contributed to the survey (which, by the way, is nicely put
together and well annotated) are Joe Alessi, Randy Campora,
Frank Crisafulli, Tom Everett, Mike Fellinger, Dave Finlayson,
Jay Friedman, Randy Hawes, John Kitzman, Don Knaub,
Mark Lawrence, Jeannie Little, Harry Maddox, Ava Ordman,
Ray Premru, Jeff Reynolds, Ralph Sauer, Benny Sluchine,
Henry Charles Smith, Denis Wick and myself. While no survey
such as this is definitive (everyone has their own ideas of
what they like and dislike) it is instructive as several discs
came up with significant numbers of votes. Besides, Gerald
Sloan's comments about each disc (he has heard them ALL!) are
very interesting, helpful and sometimes quite entertaining. I
wish I had something like this when I was building my collection
of recordings years ago.
