On Fri May 2 11:47:09 1997, Robert Holland
<rhll@uhura.cc.rochester.edu> wrote the following in the
message entitled "Composer Biographies":
...The standard source for concise biographical information
on composers is
The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.
London: Macmillan, 1980.
[see <http://www.groveartmusic.com/27966/TNGMM/> -ed]
It is published in 20 vols. and is a veritable warehouse
of information. "New Grove," as it is frequently called,
replaces the Grove's Dictionary of Music of Musicians, 5th.
ed., a 9 vol. set published in 1954. I've been to some smaller
libraries and music resource centers that have only the older
edition, so be aware of which you might be using. Each entry
is in the form of a small article and lists the writer, which
can sometimes be a useful piece of information. The composer
articles are usually in three or four parts: biography, works
list, writings, bibliography.
Depending on the stature and influence of the composer,
the biography can be divided into periods, or life and works,
and sometimes genres of works. Works lists are either complete
or selective. Complete works lists for the major composers are
each individual in the content and presentation, but all
include much useful information. They often contain date and
place of composition, date, place and performer of the premier,
and an indication where one can find it in a complete works
edition. Writings refers to prose works (as opposed to musical
works) of a given composer/author. Richard Wagner, for
instance, has a long list of writings for those interested in,
say, his political manifestos. The bibliographies are usually
brief and cite only the most important works pertaining to the
topic or composer. These can be an excellent starting point
for more detailed research.
A related source, known as "AmeriGrove," is
The New Grove Dictionary of American Music. London:
Macmillan, 1984.
Published in four vols., its scope is somewhat more narrow
than New Grove. any of the articles are contained in the
larger set, though AmeriGrove also contains some new
information. The basic structure is the same.
There exist other musical dictionaries of an encyclopedic
nature. Most notable is
Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart, [2nd ed.] Kassel:
Barenreiter, 1994-
Called MGG, many think of this as the German "New Grove."
It is projected at 20 vols. and it being brought out
one-by-one. Sibley Music Library has received the first five
vols. so far. Unlike New Grove, it divides the subject and
biographical articles into separate Sachteilen, or sections.
(The first five vols. contain only subject entries.) For
balance, one can also find French and Italian equivalents to
New Grove, though each has its own strengths and weaknesses.
Beyond large encyclopedic sets, I won't give specific
citations. But at least two strategies bear fruit fairly well.
One is to consult books written about the composer for which
one wants information. One should do a search using the name
of the composer as a subject instead of as an author.
The most useful Library of Congress classifications are
ML410 and ML134. Corresponding Dewey nos. are 780 and 016.78.
The other strategy is to do a literature search for articles
in periodicals. I will discuss this more fully in another
post.

[11.8] Where can I get information on music related dissertations?

entitled "Re: Thesis":

Any academic library should have this index, called
Dissertation Abstracts International. Musical
dissertations will be in the "A" series. Find the order
number, if you don't already have it, then look in
a recent issue for up-to-date ordering instructions
[or got to Web site for online ordering].
