: Philip Glass (b.1937): Concerto for Violin and Orchestra
: Alfred Schittke (b.1934): Concerto Grosso No.5 for Violin, an Invisible
: Piano* and Orchestr ( *: amplified, behind the stage)
: Gidon Kremer, violin; Rainer Keuschnig, piano;
: Christoph von Dohn滢yi, Wiener Philharmoniker
Glass, Philip (b.1937): American composer, noted exponent of
minimalism; studied with N.Boulanger in Paris and also with
R. Shanker. Created own ensemble, chiefly amplified electronic
music, for performing his concert works (eg. Koyaanisquatsi,
American-Indian word for 'life out of balance', which won
wider-than-classical popularity). Also well-known for his operas
including Akhnaten, Einstein on the Beach, The Fall of the House
of Usher (after Poe), The Making of the Representative for Planet 8
( after Doris Lessing).
Schnittke, Alfred (b.1934): Russian composer of part-German descent
who spent boyhood years in Vienna. Taught at Moscow Conservatory but
won notice chiefly abroad for music often boldly radical including
operas Life with an Idiot and Gesualdo; eight symphonies (no. 4 with
solo voices), (K)ein Sommernachtstraum for orchestra; ballet score
Peer Gynt, after Ibsen (chereography by John Neumeier, 1984), Moz-Art
蔠la Mozart for 8 flutes and harp; also more than 60 scores for
Russian films.
