Ω 推薦指數(以五分計)
4.0: A good course or lecturing corresponding contemporary high standards.
Evaluation:
Benefited by the instructor's plenary understandings in the period, the
course serves as an adequate introduction to English Romanticism, one of the
rifest periods of English Literature. The syllabus is selective than
egalitarian in choosing materials from the textbook. The criterion for
selection is mostly based on length and good personal taste: except "Ancient
Mariner", verse tales are excluded, and lectring on William Blake and Percy
Shelley is given slightly more emphases and time.
Yet these are just what keeps the schedule in control. The lectring is
artistic, aesthestic, and sometimes philosophical, hence characteristic in our
familiarity with the American style, and students are to review after the
class, not only for answering her review questions, but also for creating an
organic whole of self understanding, for lecturing is consisted of bits and
pieces (of contextual information) about the text.
Failing to do so may amount to some hard hours on midterm and final. (I
have posted the tests on NTU-Exam for your reference.) Test quesions are very
demanding for their great variety and disinterestedness in most lectured
supplementary issues, though there are some exceptions. Thanks to the
generosity and mercy of Prof. Wu, that we are not severely punished for our
incapability to grasping texts in our midterm. Thus, in terms of grading,
"So if all do their duty they need not fear harm." (Blake)
Homeworks (7-8 times per semester) are about video materials on
biographies of authors. They are not bad as to understand a little more about
literary figures.
Attendance is absolutely important. This is a course that does demand
(though not require) good knowledge on literary and historical basics, which
do make a difference in your hearing her lecturing. Hence for those who have
modest groundings, previewing is highly encouraged. The lecturing is mostly
in English, requiring good vocabulary and comprehension ability.

"Sight hateful, sight tormenting! thus these two
Imparadis't in one anothers arms
The happier Eden, shall enjoy thir fill
Of bliss on bliss, while I to Hell am thrust,
Where neither joy nor love, but fierce desire, ... - Paradise Lost, 4.505ff.
