TENDON OF FLEXOR DIGITORUM LONGUS: The flexor digitorum longus tendon enters
the sole by passing posterior to the medial malleolus, through the tarsal
tunnel, surrounded by a synovial sheath. It passes forward across the
sustentaculum tali of the calcaneum, then crosses over the flexor hallucis
longus tendon, which is attached to it by a tendinous slip. At this point it
receives the insertion of quadratus plantae on its lateral border. The main
tendon next divides into four parts, which pass forward to enter the fibrous
sheaths of the lateral four toes. Along the way the lumbrical muscles originate
from these digital tendons. After entering the fibrous sheath, each tendon runs
within an individual synovial sheath. At the middle of the proximal phalanges,
each digital tendon perforates the corresponding tendon of flexor digitorum
brevis, before reaching its insertion point on the distal phalanx.
