05/21/2005 8:15 PM ET NEW YORK -- The Mets lost two regulars to injury in the fifth inning Saturday afternoon. Carlos Beltran and Kaz Matsui were removed from the lineup after straining muscles. Each was listed as "day-to-day." Matsui was more likely than Beltran to play Sunday. Beltran strained his right quad. The problem had been two weeks coming. And when Beltran advanced from first to third in the first inning, it arrived. "It was stiff and tight before," he said. "But there was no pain." Beltran ran down a well-struck bases-loaded fly ball by Randy Johnson in right-center for the third out of the fifth inning. "I really had to push it to get there," he said. And when he returned to the dugout after grounding out in the fifth, he told Willie Randolph he couldn't play. Even if it had been October in the playoffs? "No." Beltran said. Matsui said he awoke Saturday with pain in the back of his neck, and it worsened as the game went on. He thought he might be able to play Sunday.
