Progress no consolation for Vazquez
Yanks righty's latest strong outing overshadowed by defeat

"Outstanding," said Derek Jeter.
"Unbelievable," according to catcher Francisco Cervelli.
"A heckuva game," from Jorge Posada.
"Fantastic job," Alex Rodriguez said.
"Really, really good," said manager Joe Girardi.
Those were the assessments of Javier Vazquez from his teammates and manager
on Friday night. The pitcher's own opening statement on his performance,
however, included the undeserved caveat to all of the praise.

"It's always tough to lose," Vazquez said.

Yes, Vazquez was on the short end of Friday's 4-0 loss to the Mets,
but it's hard to find much to criticize in his performance. The right-hander
limited the Mets to one run on three hits with four strikeouts in seven innings
, and he was literally inches -- the distance separating Cervelli's glove
and David Wright's left shoulder on a first-inning play at the plate -- from
keeping the Mets off the board for the second time in a month.

Last time, Vazquez went six one-hit innings versus the Mets, leaving
that start early only because of a bruised right index finger. The difference
this time around was that Wright reached home plate in the first inning while
the Yankees' offense couldn't in nine.

The similarities between this outing and the one across town were just
as obvious, if not as transparent on the scoreboard. Vazquez didn't allow a
hit to the final 18 batters he faced on Friday, and it wasn't the first time
he's looked unhittable over the past month.
In his first go-round against the Mets, Vazquez had a 14-batter hitless
stretch. He's had hitless streaks of 10 and 11 batters against the Orioles
and Astros lately, and he didn't allow a hit to the first 21 Blue Jays he
faced in Toronto three starts ago.

"He's been pitching like this the last month," said Cervelli. "It's
better and better every start."

Vazquez controlled his fastball and issued only three walks on Friday
-- all in his final two innings. His changeup and curveball may not have been
as electric as they have been over his past two starts, but they were pretty
close.

"He's been tremendous against us," said Wright. "He had a lot of life
on his fastball; that thing was exploding through the strike zone.
He's going to win a lot of games this season if he pitches like that."

It was further confirmation that Vazquez is more the pitcher he was
last season in Atlanta than the one he was this April for the Yankees. In his
four starts in June, Vazquez has a 2.25 ERA and a .146 opponents' batting
average -- the lowest in the American League during the month and nearly .200
points south of the .337 average opponents hit off him in April. In essence,
opposing hitters have transformed from Albert Pujols to a National League
pitcher against Vazquez.

in the strike zone. I'm making them hit the ball and throwing strikes.
Things are going good. Everything feels right."
