Red Sox Strike First, but Stay Tuned
襪子先張開 (喔~不是，是開張..XD)

BOSTON — Just think, there are 17 more of these games. The Yankees play the
Red Sox 17 more times, which means 17 more chances to witness baseball played
at its most exhilarating, frustrating or downright maddening.

The Yankees cruised into Fenway Park on Sunday night as the defending World
Series champions. They left on Monday morning thankful for a day off. They
may need it to unwind after an exhausting opening night loss to the Boston
Red Sox, who overcame three deficits of at least two runs and scored the
eventual winning run in their 9-7 victory against the Yankees on — of course
— a passed ball.

That came after C. C. Sabathia unraveled and after Chan Ho Park imploded,
after the newcomer Curtis Granderson homered in his first at-bat and after
the Yankees reclaimed the lead in the seventh inning.

What followed was symbolic of how the last decade, a turbulent one within the
Yankees-Red Sox rivalry, unfolded. Each team won two World Series titles, but
for all of the upheaval and the playoff heartbreak and ecstasy, the teams
started over Sunday night right back where they were 10 years ago: with the
Yankees defending their championship and the Red Sox playing catch-up.

“They won the World Series last year; everybody’s going after them,” said
Dustin Pedroia, who tied the score at 7-7 with his seventh-inning homer off
Park. “We’re just first on their schedule.”

To dethrone the Yankees, the Red Sox spent the off-season focused on
improving their pitching staff and their defense. They proved they could
still hit, battering 12 hits over all and scoring four runs against the
Yankees’ bullpen. Each of the Yankees’ four relievers surrendered a run or
allowed an inherited runner to score.

為了把衛冕者拉下來，襪子專注地改善他們的投手戰力跟防守。

“It’s one game,” Manager Joe Girardi said. “You don’t make too much out

The Yankees considered their relief corps a strength, boasting Mariano
Rivera, postseason dynamos like Dave Robertson and Damaso Marte, and signing
Park from the Phillies. But it undermined them in the seventh inning, when
Park, who did not allow a home run in 50 innings as a reliever with
Philadelphia last season, gave up a two-run homer to Pedroia, the third
batter he faced.

A two-out double by Kevin Youkilis chased Park, and in came Marte, a
left-hander with the cranky shoulder. His first pitch sailed wide for a wild
pitch, and his fourth, a fastball, plopped out of Jorge Posada’s glove for a
passed ball as Youkilis raced home to score the go-ahead run. Posada said
Marte missed badly on his location, but Girardi said he was not worried about
Marte’s health.

It was another rocky opening day start for Sabathia, though it hardly began
that way. Through four and two-thirds innings, Sabathia faced one batter over
the minimum. He was two strikes from pitching a clean fifth before J. D. Drew
laced the first of three consecutive singles. The Red Sox sliced the Yankees’
 lead to 5-2, and they obliterated it in the sixth, when Sabathia’s command
of his fastball and changeup started to wane.

沙胖一如季初搖搖擺擺，不意外。不過，一開始還有5-2的領先。

“I had good stuff early and I was just trying to nibble a little too much,”
 Sabathia said. “I had that lead and then probably should have just thrown
the ball over the plate and said, ‘here it is, hit it,’ instead of trying
to pitch a little too much. that hurt me tonight.’

The Yankees hammered Boston starter Josh Beckett, knocking him out after four
and two thirds, with the two opening blows supplied by some of the newest and
oldest Yankees. After Posada clobbered a homer off the right-field foul pole,
Granderson mashed a ball beyond the Red Sox’ bullpen to put the Yankees
ahead, 2-0, in the third.
