New York Yankees Team Report
-------------------------------------------------------------------

The Yankees will attempt to defend their World Series title with the
help of several players who have yet to win one. They will do their
best to put the past behind them even though it included their first
championship in nine years.

And in between all of the acclimating and bonding, the Yankees also
will have the shadow of a looming negotiation hanging over them.

CC Sabathia, Alex Rodriguez, A.J. Burnett and Mark Teixeira can take
a deep breath as they return to spring training as world champions.
They can join Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada and Mariano
Rivera in trying to help the newcomers adjust — or re-adjust.

Gone are Johnny Damon, Melky Cabrera and Hideki Matsui. In are Curtis
Granderson, Javier Vazquez and Nick Johnson. The latter two will attempt
to banish some bad memories from the mid-2000s on their first go-round
in pinstripes.

On paper, the Yankees will have an improved pitching staff with Vazquez
as a No. 4 starter and Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain competing for
the No. 5 spot in the rotation, the loser headed back to the bullpen
to set up for Rivera.

Their lineup should be strong, if a little less versatile, with
Johnson likely inheriting Damon's No. 2 spot, at least against
right-handers, and Granderson giving them pop in the middle of
the order in place of Matsui.

Brett Gardner will get the first chance to earn playing time in left
field but should be pushed by Randy Winn, Marcus Thames and Rule 5
draftee Jamie Hoffmann.

只是他必須面對老將Winn、Thames、還有規則五選來的Hoffmann的競爭。


And along with the drama of trying to defend a title with several
high-profile new pieces in place of old ones, the Yankees will know
all season the status of their captain, their iconic closer and their
manager is not guaranteed beyond this year.

GM Brian Cashman told the New York Post the club would stick to its
policy of letting contracts expire without extensions, which means
Jeter, Rivera and manager Joe Girardi will have to let the season
play out before their fate is decided.

While this type of uncertainty often causes angst, even among veterans,
it isn't likely to do much but stir the pride for Jeter and Rivera.
And Girardi's World Series win should help keep him from getting too
worked up about it as well.

It's difficult to picture a situation that would cause Jeter and the
Yankees to separate, but the uncertain status will offer an intriguing
subplot, especially if Jeter should struggle or face an injury.

但只要新合約還沒簽字生效的一天，儘管機率很低，Jeter還是可能離開洋基。
特別是如果今年球季Jeter大烙賽或是大受傷...

The Yankees have played in their mini-replica of Yankee Stadium
since 1996, when it was known as Legends Field. It was re-named
for the club's owner in 2008. The site often draws more fans than
other Grapefruit League parks, but the atmosphere is not as intimate.

反正就是在講洋基的春訓球場改過名，之前叫傳奇球場，現在以大老闆為名，

TOP CANDIDATE TO SURPRISE:
RHP Joba Chamberlain has already been rumored to have the odds
stacked against him in his battle for a rotation spot vs. RHP Phil Hughes.
Chamberlain's ability to thrive out of the bullpen in last year's
postseason and his struggles as a starter have Hughes as the early
favorite, but Chamberlain has long wanted to be a starting pitcher
and the competition could be just what he needs to push him into
letting loose.

小張被看好能在與Hughes競爭第五號先發時脫穎而出，
雖然他去年在季後賽當後援嚇嚇叫，先發時卻投得很掙扎，

TOP CANDIDATE TO DISAPPOINT:
DH Nick Johnson is replacing two popular Yankees who helped the
club win the World Series last year, in different ways. Johnson's
signing all but closed the door on the club bringing back Johnny
Damon and also had fans wondering why Hideki Matsui was not
re-signed as a DH. Given Johnson's injury-plagued career, a training
camp injury would not be a complete surprise and would neutralize
his ability to hit with power and get on base.

AUTHORITY FIGURES:
Joe Girardi (270-216 overall, 192-132 with New York) lightened
up last year and helped his team bond in spring training with a
billiards tournament many players later credited as building
camaraderie. More important, he remained cool under fire and made
many impressive moves during the regular season, including moving
Derek Jeter to the leadoff spot. Pitching coach Dave Eiland also
came around after some early questions and will have to oversee
the Joba Chamberlain-Phil Hughes battle for the last rotation spot.

  the Yankees, who invited him to their spring camp. Moseley, 28,
  went 1-0 with a 4.30 ERA in three starts for the Angels in 2009.
  He was non-tendered by Los Angeles in December after having hip
  surgery in August.

—SS Derek Jeter recently told a small group of reporters he doesn't
  plan on commenting about his expiring contract status until most

  status after this year under the category of things he can't control.
  While it is hard to imagine the Yankees and their captain separating,
  general manager Brian Cashman told the New York Post the club will
  stick to its policy of not offering contract extensions to Jeter,
  Mariano Rivera or manager Joe Girardi, all of whom have contracts
  that end this year.

  spring training site in Tampa. Chamberlain's success out of the
  bullpen last postseason, along with his struggles as a starter in
  the regular season, have some listing Hughes as a favorite to win
  the job. Hughes would then have to then follow the same type of "Joba
  Rules" that would allow him to build arm strength back up as a starter.
  "Just a guess, I'd assume it'd be around 175-180 innings, but that's
  pure speculation," Hughes said of his possible limit. "I haven't been
  told."

—OF Marcus Thames reportedly had been on the Yankees' radar
through the offseason, and he will be given a chance to compete
for a job after signing a minor league contract. Thames, a .243
career hitter who batted .265 against left-handers, was originally
drafted by the Yankees and hit a home run against Randy Johnson
in his first big-league at-bat. He hit .252 with 13 homers in 258
at-bats for the Tigers last season and is expected to compete with
Randy Winn and Jamie Hoffmann for a spot as the right-handed hitting
platoon with OF Brett Gardner in left.

—OF Randy Winn officially signed a one-year deal reportedly worth
$1.1 million but found out he would have more competition than he
originally thought in trying to earn playing time. Winn was brought
on to serve as a right-handed hitting outfielder who could challenge
Brett Gardner for the job in left field and already also had to
compete with Rule 5 draftee Jamie Hoffmann, who cannot be sent to
the minors or else he has to be returned to the Dodgers. But just
as the ink was drying on Winn's contract, the Yankees offered a minor
league invite to OF Marcus Thames, a right-handed hitting outfielder
with pop they had considered through the offseason.

Winn本來大概以為左外野的先發位置只要跟Gardner搶，搶不到也有右打platoon，

—C Jesus Montero, one of the club's top prospects, recently
took some grounders at first base in spring training, according
to the New York Daily News. Montero, who will work out in big-league
camp but then likely head to Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Pa.)
is considered a possible heir to C Jorge Posada, but there have also
been rumors he could be switched to first base. Montero told the News
he wanted to be a catcher, but playing first "may help me get to the
big leagues faster." Perhaps as a backup, but with Mark Teixeira at
first and Posada already starting to be considered as a potential
part-time DH, the Yankees would seem to have an opening behind the
plate first.

ROSTER REPORT

The Yankees open their title defense without some of the folks who
helped earn it but remain optimistic they have made the right moves.
While they could miss the veteran presence of Johnny Damon and
Hideki Matsui as well as the clutch, carefree vibe Melky Cabrera
added, the Yankees improved their starting pitching dramatically
with Javier Vazquez and added some impressive bats in Curtis Granderson
and Nick Johnson. It will be important for the newcomers to get
acclimated in spring training, much like last year's free agent stars
did, so manager Joe Girardi might want to consider another pool
tournament or a trip to a bowling alley.

The Yankees were operating from strength but not depth in the
rotation last year, and the addition of Vazquez adds both. He
should be an impressive No. 4 starter and take the pressure off
of whoever wins the battle between Hughes and Chamberlain. The
club also has some options in case of injury with RHP Chad Gaudin,
RHP Alfredo Aceves and RHP Sergio Mitre. As impressive as the
bottom end is, the Yankees' top is even better with Sabathia
coming off of an impressive postseason that should only boost the
ace's confidence even more.

預測輪值: CC AJB 派派 Vaz 小朋友贏家

洋基將擺脫去年那個強力但深度不足的輪值，因為Vaz來了，而且只是個4號，
這將大大減低五號先發的壓力，不管兩個強力小朋友的競爭是誰出線。

The Yankees bullpen grew as the season wore on last year and
should be stocked in 2010. With Rivera facing a contract year
and knowing he'll once again have to show he can defy his age,
he should have a typically dominant season. The loser of the
Chamberlain-Hughes battle for the rotation should make for an
impressive setup man, though Robertson could surprise if someone
struggles.

Marte showed in the postseason he could be trusted as the top
lefty out of the bullpen, and Aceves and Gaudin will give the
club a strong middle relief base from which to work. Logan, who
came over from Atlanta, will have to impress in spring training
to ensure his spot as a second lefty and stave off other relief
candidates, such as Sergio Mitre.

左手牛: 馬鐵 羅根(金鋼狼??)
右手牛: 羅伯森 Ace 狗蛋

洋基的牛棚變動不大，Mo神依舊是那個Mo神，而且今年還是他的合約年，
不過他的一般年已經跟很多人的合約年差不多強了，今年大概還是一貫的強。
年齡在Mo神的身上似乎沒有留下任何痕跡(除了頭髮)。

Joba與Phil會有一個人來當Set-up，他們兩個都已證明是個強力的後援投手。
如果有人表現不佳，羅伯森或許會有驚艷的表現來補足這個位置。

馬鐵在去年的季後賽已經證明，只要他健康，就是個頂級的左手牛(薪水也是XD)。
Ace跟狗蛋可以負責穩定地吃下比賽中段的局數，羅根則必須在春訓有好表現，
來證明他是僅次於馬鐵的左手牛，並且壓過其餘牛棚候選人(例如Mitre)。

The Yankees lose a little versatility with Johnson in the No. 2
spot instead of the speedy Johnny Damon and have to hope that
Granderson can get his strikeouts under control and find a little
more success against lefties than he had with Detroit. But it's
an impressive lineup, and manager Joe Girardi will have some options
to play with at times. He can flip Granderson and Posada or even
move Granderson to the No. 2 spot against lefties. He also could
move up Cano depending on who has the hot hand. The 3-4 combination
of Teixeira and Rodriguez could be the most potent in the league.

預測打線

Johnson打第二棒可能會讓洋基在戰術運用上少了些靈活性，
因為他是個胖嘟嘟的打者，不像大門一樣可以盜盜盜。
洋基只能祈禱葛蘭嬸可以降低他的被三振率還有被左殺，

Pena and Cervelli are expected to graduate to full-time reserve
duty thanks to their impressive stints as rookie fill-ins last year.
Cervelli has been praised for his work behind the plate, and Pena
is an excellent defensive infielder but would probably not be used
as a primary sub in the event of a long absence by a starter. Also
in the mix at catcher is Mike Rivera, signed as a minor league free
agent.

Winn should have a spot on the roster after signing a one-year deal,
leaving minor league invite Thames and Rule 5 draftee Hoffmann to
likely battle for a spot depending on how many pitchers the club carries.

預測能留在開季名單

Pena跟Cervelli去年頂位置頂得不錯，所以值得被留下。
Cervelli當捕手當得不壞，Pena也是個防守不錯的內野手，
但大概不會常常看到他們上場，即使有先發野手長期缺陣也一樣。
(意思是如果Posada或Jeter/Cano/A-Rod受傷，會另外簽人或交易???)

Winn應該會為自己贏得一個位置，Thames和Hoffmann則不一定會有位置，
端看Girardi想在25人名單裡帶幾個投手，剩下幾個野手名額缺。


TOP ROOKIES: OF Jamie Hoffmann figures to be given every chance
to succeed since he is a Rule 5 draftee; if the Yankees do not
keep him on the big-league roster they will have to return him
to the Dodgers. C Francisco Cervelli impressed the Yankees enough
during his brief stint that the club let veteran backup C Jose Molina
go. At times, Cervelli was considered the best signal-caller on the
roster.

最佳菜鳥

Hoffmann將會獲得每一個可以留在開季名單的機會，因為他是規則五選來的，
如果洋基沒有整季把他放在大聯盟25人名單，就必須把他還給躲人。
