Boone injures knee, could miss '04

Aaron Boone, whose 11th-inning home run gave the Yankees their emotional pennan
t-winning victory over Boston last October, may miss the entire 2004 season aft
er suffering a knee injury last week.

Boone injured his left knee playing basketball, which would be a violation of h
is contract with the Yankees. Two "baseball sources" told SI.com, Sports Illust
rated's website, that doctors believe the third baseman may have sustained a to
rn anterior cruciate ligament.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman confirmed the injury in a statement.

"I can confirm that the Yankees have been notified by his representatives that
third baseman Aaron Boone suffered an injury to his left knee while playing bas
ketball," Cashman said. "We are currently evaluating the extent of the injury a
nd expect to solicit multiple opinions before providing a complete diagnosis. C
oncerning his contract, I can confirm that there are certain prohibited activit
ies which include basketball. I will not comment further on his contract situat
ion at this time."

"I don't really have anything to say," Boone said when reached by telephone by
MLB.com.

The third baseman avoided arbitration with the Yankees in early December, agree
ing to a one-year deal worth $5.75 million.

The Yankees dealt their best pitching prospect, Brandon Claussen, to the Cincin
nati Reds for Boone at the trading deadline last July. In 54 games with the Yan
kees, Boone batted .254 with six home runs and 31 RBIs.

If Boone is out for the year, New York's current options at third base include
Enrique Wilson and Miguel Cairo. Drew Henson, the team's third-base prospect at
 Triple-A, is not considered ready for the Majors, though minor league shortsto
p Erick Almonte has played some third base.
