As George Steinbrenner asserts more influence over the Yankees'
organization, his inner circle is closing ever tighter. Gordon
Blakeley, Steinbrenner's highest-ranking baseball operations
official in Tampa, Fla., said last night that he and the Yankees
are negotiating a buyout of his contract.

But Blakeley's influence seemed to wane last season, partly
because of his belief that the farm system should be primarily
for player development. Steinbrenner stresses won-lost records
for minor league teams.

"Who we're drafting, how we're developing players — is it
important to win at the minor league level or is it important
to develop and move players up?" Blakeley said. "For me, it's
to move players up, even if it means you don't win at Trenton
or Tampa."
