NYTIMES:Clemens to Decide on Return in a Month, His Agent Says

Roger Clemens will decide in about 30 days whether he wants to stay retired or pitch next season for the Astros, his agent said Saturday.

The agent, Randy Hendricks, speaking at an awards ceremony here, said he believed Clemens would have to decide by early January. Clemens could not return to the Yankees until May 1 because the Yankees did not offer him salary arbitration after he said he would retire. Hendricks said the only team Clemens would play for is the Astros.

"Thirty days, as a rule of thumb," Hendricks said. "I don't think you could crank it up on Feb. 1 after not doing any work for three months."

Clemens said repeatedly last season that he would not come back. But he lives in Houston, and since the Astros signed his close friend Andy Pettitte on Thursday, Clemens has considered pitching in his hometown.

Clemens told reporters he was "definitely" tempted, and said he was playing golf on Tuesday with Astros first baseman Jeff Bagwell. "It's flattering, it's awesome, but I don't think it's pressure," Clemens said. "It has a lot to do with things you don't foresee. That's why you leave that percent open."

Gerry Hunsicker, the Astros' general manager, said that he was not aware Clemens was in town and that he was not seeking out Hendricks. But Hunsicker said the Astros would always have a spot ready.

"If it's next week or next month or March 1, we're still interested," Hunsicker said.

Clemens probably never envisioned Pettitte signing with the Astros, and with the United States Olympic baseball team having failed to qualify for the Athens Games, that is no longer an option. Now, Hendricks said, Clemens may let his family make his decision.

"He will not go against his family," Hendricks said. "And everything he said, he meant when he said it."

Hendricks said Clemens had to consider the physical toll of playing again, but Clemens said he has worked out four times already with Pettitte. If he wants to team up with him again, Clemens knows where to turn.

"He's retired," Hunsicker said. "He knows where we are, and I think he knows our interest."
