An official who recently had contact with the Yankees' front office said yesterday that the Yankees were planning to try to sign free-agent second baseman Luis Castillo, who just won a Gold Glove after helping the Florida Marlins to the World Series title. The same official said that if the Yankees couldn't get Castillo, they would try to sign Japanese shortstop Kaz Matsui and convince him to play second base, or possibly turn to Red Sox free-agent second baseman Todd Walker. Walker's agent, Alan Meersand, said the Yankees had already contacted him. That indicates that the Yankees are considering at least moving Soriano from second base to the outfield. But there were other indications yesterday that they might be considering shipping him out of town completely One official with knowledge of the Yankees' plans said the Yankees were interested in trying to trade for Arizona right-hander Curt Schilling.Another official said the team would make a strong play for Montreal right-hander Javier Vazquez. Either pitcher would prevent the Yankees from having to give a big-money contract to more than one free-agent starter. The Yankees would like to bring back free-agent left-hander Andy Pettitte, but they feel they need two starters to shore up next year's rotation. If they made a trade for a Schilling or a Vazquez, they wouldn't have to give long-term contracts to both Pettitte and another free agent such as Bartolo Colon. It's likely that Soriano would have to be part of the package for either Schilling or Vazquez, though the Yankees' early internal discussions on Schilling have focused on a package with Nick Johnson at its center. If the Yankees moved Soriano to the outfield, he could play right field or center field. But there's also a chance the Yankees will pursue a quality free-agent right fielder such as Vladimir Guerrero or Gary Sheffield. As for Castillo, the speedy second baseman who would give the Yankees a true leadoff hitter, he resolved a tricky agent situation that improved his chances of being a Yankee. Castillo, who would probably be seeking a three- or four-year contract worth about $7 million per year, has settled on the New York-based Levinsons to represent him, rather than Scott Boras. The Yankees have done many deals over the past few years with the Levinsons, including bad ones such as Rondell White, Gerald Williams and Todd Zeile. They have a poor relationship with Boras, who represents Bernie Williams and Jeff Weaver. Boras, incidentally, isn't thrilled about the idea of the Yankees possibly moving Williams to left field for the 2004 season. "Why?" Boras asked. "Are they getting Carlos Beltran?" Beltran, the Kansas City Royals center fielder who may be available in a trade, is a player who intrigues the Yankees and also is represented by Boras. But the Yankees don't know if they'll be able to make a run at Beltran. Their reason for moving Williams would be if they decided to move Soriano to center field, or if they felt Hideki Matsui would be better in center than Williams is now. "The way their roster is currently constructed, I don't see any reason for them to move Bernie," Boras said. "Now, if they went out and signed someone or made a trade and that changed the landscape, then we'll listen. He's an employee of the team and he's a team player." Manager Joe Torre said last week he had brought up the idea to Williams during the second half of the season, and that Williams was aware the team was considering moving him out of center field. Boras said he had heard no such thing. "Joe told him during the playoffs that he's his center fielder," Boras said."So, until they tell us something different, that's what I'm operating under." Yankees third base coach Lee Mazzilli could be named manager of the Orioles as early as today.Mazzilli was named as the front-runner among three finalists for the job in yesterday's Baltimore Sun. The other finalists, according to the Sun, were Milwaukee Brewers bench coach Rich Dauer and Orioles bench coach Sam Perlozzo.Hall of Famer Eddie Murray also remains a possibility. As expected, Pettitte filed for free agency. Yankees GM Brian Cashman said last week the team would not be negotiating with Pettitte until the free-agency period, which begins Monday. Until Monday, the Yankees are the only team allowed to negotiate with Pettitte. Right-hander Roger Clemens also filed for free agency, but he has said he intends to retire. His filing gives him the option of negotiating with all 30 teams if he changes his mind.
