The Skinny: The Cardinals' 1st round pick in 2001, Pope started
the year by tossing 17.2 innings without allowing an earned run.
He left the game with elbow pain in his third start, and missed
three months after surgery was performed to remove bone chips
from the joint. He returned to Peoria in mid-July and didn't skip
a beat, gaining stamina throughout the summer and finishing the
year with a complete game five hitter and 8.1 shutout innings in
his final two starts. Pope is a tad undersized, and his fastball
is just a tick above MLB average, sitting at 90-92 mph.
His uses a hard slider as an out pitch, and his changeup is a
third plus offering. Pope is a little undersized, and like Haren,
depends on control and excellent movement to make up for a lack
of overpowering stuff.
2003 Outlook: At 23, Pope is behind most 23 year-old pitchers in
his development. He'll start the season with the Cardinals new
Florida State League affiliate at Palm Beach, and could see AA
Tennessee towards the end of the year if he stays healthy and
pitches well.
