New York Yankees boss George Steinbrenner was critical of Derek Jeter during th
e offseason. But the Boss must have a high opinion of his starting shortstop.
Jeter will become the 11th captain in New York Yankees history on Tuesday. acco
rding to news reports in New York. The club has scheduled a 4 p.m. ET news conf
erence to announce the move. The Yankees will hold the news conference in Cinci
nnati prior to their game against the Reds.
Jeter, 28, will be the first Yankees captain since Don Mattingly retired in 199
5. Other previous Yankees captains include Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and the late T
hurman Munson.
Jeter has been an instrumental part of the last four Yankees World Series wins.
He's in the third year of a 10-year, $189 million contract.
