Contreras threw fastballs that reached 97 miles an hour, but all of his strikeouts came on splitters. Or, more precisely, they came on the pitch that is now called the splitter. "It's an old- fashioned forkball," said Mel Stottlemyre, the Yankees' pitching coach. The forkball is a close cousin of the split-finger fastball, which became popular in the mid-1980's. Both pitches break late and dive toward the dirt, but the splitter - the kind Roger Clemens throws - breaks sharply and is thrown harder. The forkball is thrown with the index and middle fingers spread wider, and it comes in slower, with more of a rolling break. "It's a good one, one of the better ones you'll see," said the Orioles' Jeff Conine, referring to Contreras's version of the pitch. "It's more like a forkball. Clemens has a split, like a fastball that drops off a table. This one, you see the seams, and it almost moves like a knuckleball." Gibbons looked baffled with a 1-2 count in the seventh. A left- handed hitter, he committed to swing early, planting his right foot and then waiting as the ball hung in the air and seemed to vanish. He managed to tip it into Jorge Posada's glove for strike three, then turned to watch the scoreboard replay as he trudged back to the dugout. "It was kind of a strange pitch," Gibbons said. "It's one you want to foul off. It looked like a curveball, and all of a sudden it's 78 or 77 miles an hour. It was almost like an eephus pitch. I tipped it. It was good enough for me. He definitely had good stuff. I can see why they think so highly of him." ...... XD -- ============================= My All Time Yankees C Yogi Berra, 1B Lou Gehrig, 2B Toni Lazzeri, 3B Graig Nettles, SS Phil Rizzuto, OF Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, SP Whitey Ford, RP Mariano Rivera Manager Casey Stengel -- -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ※ 編輯: bluedoll 來自: 61.230.62.95 (08/26 01:34)
