9. 1B Tino Martinez, .262 BA, 23 HR, 76 RBI in 2004
Projected rotation
1. Randy Johnson, 16-14, 2.60 ERA in 2004
2. Mike Mussina, 12-9, 4.59 ERA in 2004
3. Carl Pavano, 18-8, 3.00 ERA in 2004
4. Jaret Wright, 15-8, 3.28 ERA in 2004
5. Kevin Brown, 10-6, 4.09 ERA in 2004
Projected bullpen
Closer: Mariano Rivera, 53 saves, 1.94 ERA in 2004
RH setup man: Tom Gordon, 2.21 ERA in 2004
LH setup man: Mike Stanton, 3.16 ERA in 2004
The new guys
Johnson: The Big Unit gives the Yankees the bona fide No. 1 starter they
were desperately missing in the ALCS against the Red Sox. Johnson
will love the run support his new team will surely give him, making
him a surefire bet for a 20-win season.
Pavano: The right-hander hit the jackpot after a breakout year with the
Marlins, signing a four-year deal with the Yankees. Pavano may be
getting top-of-the-rotation money, but the 29-year-old won't have to
be any more than the No. 3 starter.
Wright: A year in Atlanta rejuvenated the right-hander's career, prompting
the Yankees to sign him to a three-year contract. Wright will be the
No. 4 or 5 starter, so the pressure won't be what it was last year
with the Braves.
Stanton: The Yankees never replaced him with another reliable lefty after he
left in the winter of 2002, so Stanton returns in 2005 as the team's
only southpaw reliever.
Felix Rodriguez: Although Stanton is the bullpen's only lefty, Rodriguez may
emerge as a specialist against left-handed hitters, as his .
192 opponents' batting average against lefties is dominant.
Martinez: The Yankees let Martinez leave after 2001 in order to sign Giambi.
Now, Martinez returns to play first as Giambi works his way back
from injury and controversy.
Womack: The veteran second baseman replaces Miguel Cairo, giving the Yankees
a little more speed at the top (or bottom) of the batting order.
Rey Sanchez: He steps into the utility infielder role occupied by Enrique
Wilson since 2001.
Prospects to watch
Robinson Cano: A talented middle infielder who probably needs another year at
Triple-A, Cano could get a September callup or be called into
action as an injury reinforcement.
Chien-Ming Wang: The 24-year-old right-hander impressed after a promotion to
Triple-A Columbus in the middle of 2004, going 5-1 with a
2.01 ERA in six starts. Wang could find himself in the Majors
if one of the starting five lands on the DL.
Returning from injury
Giambi: A knee injury, an intestinal parasite and a benign tumor wrecked
Giambi's 2004 campaign, but it will be his reaction to the offseason
steroid controversy which will prove the biggest obstacle for the
first baseman/DH.
Steve Karsay: The right-hander showed some promise during a handful of
September appearances after returning from shoulder surgery,
but a full Spring Training should get Karsay ready for a big
return in 2005.
On the rebound
Brown: After a blazing start to 2004, Brown battled injuries over the second
half of the season. His painful outing in Game 7 of the ALCS will be
fresh in people's minds -- including his own -- until he provides a
reason to forget about it.
Jeter: His final numbers looked solid, but Jeter's two-month slumber to start
2004 hurt his totals. If he can avoid the slow start, Jeter should be
back on top of the .300 mark.
Long gone
Javier Vazquez: New York signed Vazquez with the hope that he would anchor
its staff for the next four years. After a sub-par second
half, Vazquez was shipped off to Arizona in the deal that
brought the Big Unit to the Bronx.
Jon Lieber: Lieber had a successful return from Tommy John surgery, proving
to be one of the team's most consistent starters in the second
half and in the postseason. New York opted for the younger Wright,
allowing Lieber to leave for Philadelphia.
Orlando Hernandez: El Duque was the nicest surprise of the 2004 season for
the Yankees, returning from shoulder surgery to become the
team's ace after the All-Star break. When the Yankees
signed Pavano, Hernandez signed with the White Sox.
Kenny Lofton: Lofton never established himself as a favorite of manager Joe
Torre, as Williams remained as the everyday center fielder for
most of 2004. Lofton was traded to the Phillies for Felix
Rodriguez.

Triple play: Three questions that need answers
1. How will Randy Johnson handle New York?
Although his introduction to the Big Apple wasn't as smooth as he had hoped
it would be, Johnson shouldn't have much trouble adapting to life as a
Yankee. The media attention will be demanding, but the chance to play in
front of a lineup which features the likes of A-Rod, Jeter, Sheffield and
Matsui should be more than enough incentive for the five-time Cy Young
winner.
2. Will Jason Giambi return as a productive player?
It's hard to say how this winter has affected Giambi, whose career may be
summed up by his performance in the upcoming season. With the steroid
controversy creating a cloud over his head, Giambi will have to prove to the
rest of the world that he is still the MVP-caliber player that the Yankees
signed three years ago.
3. Why will Carl Pavano be any different than Javier Vazquez or Jeff Weaver?
For one, Pavano thrived in the postseason, going 2-0 with a 1.40 ERA during
the Marlins' championship run of 2003. Pavano also has the luxury of not
being dubbed as the club's future ace, as Johnson is expected to be in the
rotation for the first three of Pavano's four years in pinstripes.
The bottom line
Another AL East title? A fourth consecutive 100-win season? Another Division
Series victory? While each of these achievements would be nice for the
Yankees, the 2005 season will be defined by the club's success in October.
It's a simple formula: win the World Series and the season will be a success.
If not, it will be another long winter in the Bronx.
