強打明星薛菲爾5日傳出驚人之語，在接受《紐約雜誌》記者訪問時，薛菲爾說，「我知道球隊的領袖是誰，但不會說出他的名字。」老薛並未言明自己是領袖，但言下之意，隊長吉特和大聯盟最高薪的A-ROD羅瑞葛茲都不是，難道他指的領袖是台灣投手王建民(新聞、網站、圖片)嗎？
洋基目前做客多倫多與藍鳥三連戰，薛菲爾5日於多城表示，「吉特只是隊長，並不是球隊領袖」，但老薛在訪談內容傳出後則說，雜誌記者在撰稿時不免加油添醋來豐富報導內容，扭曲事實真相，也打擊洋基隊的團隊士氣。
薛菲爾說，「我不會說出領袖的名字，但為何球迷不知道是誰呢？因為媒體不願意讓球迷知道，媒體只會以正面的報導來推銷那兩人（吉特、A-ROD，這些人根本就都是垃圾。」老薛還說，他不需要替自己吹牛，他的成績自然會替他說話。目前他21發全壘打、81打點都落在羅瑞葛茲之後，而0.302的打擊率也不如吉特和A-ROD。
《紐約雜誌》發言人堅持報導的真實性，且聲明握有訪談的錄音帶。吉特則表示他和薛菲爾交情不錯，這篇報導不會影響他們的關係，「薛菲爾根本沒提到我的名字，雖然文章提到我，但不是來自薛菲爾口中。」洋基總教練托瑞則說，薛菲爾向來直言無隱，他並未把報導當一回事。
