STARTING PITCHING: By spring training, Kevin Brown will be a bad memory, and
Al Leiter likely will be retired.
Who knows if Shawn Chacon sticks? It depends on his second half, and even
with a good showing he might resurface as starting insurance or a bullpen
option.
The Yankees discovered something important this year in Chien-Ming Wang, who
proved he could handle a starting task.
Randy Johnson, Mike Mussina, Carl Pavano, Jaret Wright and Wang could be the
starting five next year. More likely, the Yanks will have to add another
proven starter to bolster this injury-prone group.
Wang could always be used in that Ramiro Mendoza-type role that Joe Torre
often mentions.
Figure the Yankees would seek to get younger, so going after Tom Glavine
might make less sense than attempting to pry Victor Zambrano from the Mets -
if the subway rivals are inclined to make such a trade.
Then again, Roger Clemens is always a seductive winter name that the Astros
might not able to afford.
Pittsburgh's Mark Redman still could be an option this year, since he holds a
$4.95 option for '06, and might slip through waivers.
A.J. Burnett could be the big free agent fish, but do the Yanks really want
another Marlins right-hander to follow Pavano? Probably not.
Joe Mays, Jason Johnson and John Thomson are possibilities, as the Yanks
could go for the durable workhorse over the big name.
RELIEF PITCHING: The Yanks once paid crazy money for Steve Karsay to set up
Mariano Rivera. They'll have to do it again if they want potential free agent
lefty B.J. Ryan to be their eighth-inning solution.
Ryan will be targeted, or perhaps free agents Kyle Farnsworth or Guillermo
Mota could replace Tom Gordon, if the Yanks let him go after the season.
Embree has a chance to be re-signed, but only if he rekindles that old autumn
fire. Tanyon Sturtze seems to have found a home.
BRIEF: Recent signee Hideo Nomo failed to make it out of the third inning
Monday night in his first start for Class AAA Columbus. He allowed three
hits, walked four and struck out four.
