Breaking Down The Yankees Roster
October 12, 2005
By DOM AMORE, Courant Staff Writer A look at the Yankees roster and its
future going into the off-season:
Back in 2006
Joe Torre: The end of the marriage is getting close, but it's not quite there
yet.
Jorge Posada: Signed to a contract that makes him nearly impossible to trade
but still valuable in the clubhouse.
Jason Giambi: Rejuvenated and secure, he just needs to stay off, well, we
won't get into specifics.
Robinson Cano: A promising talent who will need to cut down on the brain
locks next year.
Derek Jeter: Still a productive, smart player and signed for five more years.
Alex Rodriguez: He's developing a bad postseason rep, but in New York he'll
get more chances to undo it.
Hideki Matsui: Soon to be a free agent, but neither he nor the Yankees want
to split.
Randy Johnson: Two more years at $16 million per. Can he be better at 42 than
41?
Mike Mussina: Back for one more year at $19 million.
Carl Pavano: He has something to prove and he couldn't be traded until he
shows he's healthy.
Jaret Wright: Plagued by a bad shoulder and bad luck, but there is still much
to like.
Shawn Chacon: He'll get a raise in arbitration and will still be great
replacement for Kevin Brown.
Chien-Ming Wang: If he can stay healthy, he could be a big winner with a this
team.
Mariano Rivera: Three words: the very best.
Wait and see
Brian Cashman: Fed up with Yankees politics and lunacy, the Orioles are
calling.
Gary Sheffield: Surprised? Going into the last year of his contract, he'll
want an extension. The Yankees won't budge. Watch the fur fly.
Bernie Williams: Can his pride allow him to accept a bench role?
Tino Martinez: He helped save the season with a May hot streak, but not the
player he used to be.
Aaron Small: If the price is right, a valuable swing man. But at 33, he needs
to cash in on his 10-0 season.
Tom Gordon: Too old to stand up to the rigors of a seven-month season.
John Flaherty: Popular, but hit only .165 and might retire.
Bubba Crosby: A nice story, until he didn't hear Sheffield say "I got it."
Tanyon Sturtze: Now that he has turned back into Tanyon Sturtze, he might be
gone.
Scott Proctor: Great fastball, but he can't miss bats.
Gone, goodbye
Tony Womack: Believe it or not, he is still on the roster
Ruben Sierra: He will be missed, but it's time.
Matt Lawton: Couldn't hit or field. Bad pickup.
Kevin Brown: It's time to shut it down, big guy. Keep smiling.
Mark Bellhorn: Based on how little he played, there's no sense bringing him
back.
Alan Embree: Couldn't get hitters out when ahead in the count, which says
much about his diminished stuff.
Al Leiter: It was a blast, but he's ready to retire
Felix Rodriguez: There's no truth to the rumor that he and Torre have never
actually met.
Ramiro Mendoza: These comeback specials just never work out.
Rey Sanchez: Another ill-advised pickup, didn't play after mid-June.
