(October 13, 2005) — Many baseball fans, particularly in the northeast
United States, believe this season's Major League Baseball playoffs lost most
of their appeal when the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox both were
eliminated in the first round.
But should we have been surprised?
The Yankees and Red Sox had baseball's two highest-paid rosters this season.
They also were the two best-hitting teams. That's no coincidence. The best
hitters generally make the most money.
But the Yankees and Red Sox focus so much on trying to outhit each other and
win the American League East that they tend to overlook the bigger picture.
They forget that making the playoffs is only the first step. They were
defeated in the first round by teams with lower payrolls and less offense but
also with more pitching, team speed and defense.
Here's how the four winners in the division series compared to the four
losers during the 2005 regular season.
Los Angeles Angels ($95 million payroll; .270 batting average; 761 runs; 147
HRs; 161 stolen bases; 43 sacrifice hits; 3.67 ERA; 643 runs allowed; 87
errors) defeated the
New York Yankees ($205.9 million payroll; .276 batting
average; 886 runs; 229 HRs; 84 stolen bases; 28 sacrifice hits; 4.48 ERA; 789
runs allowed; 95 errors).
Chicago White Sox ($75.2 million payroll; .262 batting average; 741 runs; 200
HRs; 137 stolen bases; 53 sacrifice hits; 3.63 ERA; 645 runs allowed; 94
errors) defeated the
Boston Red Sox ($121.3 million; .281 batting average;
910 runs; 198 HRs; 45 stolen bases; 14 sacrifice hits; 4.76 ERA; 805 runs
allowed; 109 errors).
Houston Astros ($76.8 million payroll; .256 batting average; 687 runs; 160
HRs; 114 stolen bases; 82 sacrifice hits; 3.51 ERA; 605 runs allowed; 89
errors) defeated the
Atlanta Braves ($85.1 million payroll; .265 batting
average; 769 runs; 184 HRs; 92 stolen bases; 75 sacrifice hits; 3.97 ERA; 674
runs allowed; 86 errors).
St. Louis Cardinals ($92.9 million; .270 batting average; 805 runs; 170 HRs;
83 stolen bases; 77 sacrifice hits; 3.48 ERA; 634 runs allowed; 100 errors)
defeated the
San Diego Padres ($62.9 million payroll; .257 batting average;
681 runs; 130 HRs; 96 stolen bases; 72 sacrifice hits; 4.15 ERA; 725 runs
allowed; 109 errors).
All four winning teams had lower ERAs and more sacrifice hits for the season
than the four losing teams, and three of the four winning teams had more
stolen bases, fewer errors and lower payrolls.
The bottom line: The "small ball" teams won three of the four series.
The only exception was St. Louis over San Diego, and that was a mismatch in every
way. ...
The Yankees vs. the Red Sox probably is the most exciting matchup in
baseball today but both teams would have a better chance in the postseason if
they could manufacture runs and had a little more speed and defense.
