Yankees sack coach Allen

The reshaping of the Yankees' coaching staff continued yesterday as the
Bombers informed Neil Allen that he no longer will be the bullpen coach.

Reached at home, GM Brian Cashman confirmed the move and said Allen had been
offered a new position within the organization that is not on the major-league
level.

Allen's removal means the Yankees now have a bullpen coach vacancy to go
along with their opening at pitching coach. Former Yankee Ron Guidry remains
the top candidate for that spot, though Joe Kerrigan, whom Cashman hired as
a scout earlier this year, is under serious consideration to join the
coaching staff in some capacity.

When Mel Stottlemyre was considering retiring last winter, there was
speculation that Allen, who pitched for the Yankees and Mets and who had

and Cashman have been working to set next year's coaching staff before g

Former Phillies manager Larry Bowa will be the Yanks' new third-base coach,

Lee Mazzilli is expected to become the new bench coach, replacing Joe

The reshuffling is part of the Yanks' stated commitment to giving Torre
and Cashman more authority, in hopes that will quell the internal bickering
between the New York and Tampa offices. The Yanks' first choice for pitching
coach was Leo Mazzone, who ended up leaving the Braves for the Orioles
instead. But Torre has been supportive of Guidry, while Cashman is a
proponent of Kerrigan, so that is seen as a likely combination on the staff.
