Allen will not return
Firing of bullpen coach is proof Connors is in Boss' doghouse after failure
to sign Mazzone

The Yankees have informed Neil Allen he will not return as bullpen coach,
proof that Billy Connors has quickly fallen out of favor with George
Steinbrenner.
If Mel Stottlemyre had retired last year, Allen likely would have been his
replacement because of Connors' backing, which Steinbrenner has long
considered as good as gold. But when the Yankees decided to demote Allen
this past week, Connors said he wasn't even informed, let alone consulted.
"I just heard about it today," he said yesterday.
According to someone familiar with the situation, Connors has been in The
Boss' doghouse since Leo Mazzone turned down the Yankees for the Orioles
two weeks ago. Mazzone was Connors' top choice to replace Stottlemyre and
the person said he went so far as to "guarantee" that the former Braves
coach would join them. But once it became clear that Mazzone preferred the
Orioles, Steinbrenner blamed Connors and eliminated him from the
decision-making.
Now, with Connors on the outs and with Brian Cashman given assurances that
every baseball decision will go through him, Allen's departure comes when
the Yankees are close to bringing coaches on board who are not close with
Connors.
Ron Guidry, who will likely replace Stottlemyre as the pitching coach, has
never had much of a relationship with Connors, according to someone familiar
with them. Asked how Guidry will do as a first-year coach, Connors said,
"He's a great man, a great person. But it will be a learning process. He'll
work at it. It is just experience."
Former Red Sox, Phillies and Expos pitching coach Joe Kerrigan appears to
be the leading candidate to replace Allen as bullpen coach. Connors,
according to a person familiar with his thinking, has been against Kerrigan
from the beginning. Asked his thoughts on Kerrigan, Connors said, "I don't
know about Joe."
Allen
Although Connors said he has not spoken to Steinbrenner in some time, he
believes he will be among the Tampa contingent traveling to New York for
the organizational meetings, which are expected to begin today. But as of
noon yesterday, he said he had not received official word yet. "I'm waiting
for the phone call," he said.
Connors also expressed his disappointment that Allen is not returning to
the major-league coaching staff, saying, "Neil is a good guy. He paid his
dues in the minor leagues. He would have made a fine pitching coach. He'll
have his opportunity somewhere."

Neil Allen.....
