Bowa named third-base coach
Yankees add former Phillies manager to Torre's staff

NEW YORK -- The Yankees took the first step toward filling Joe Torre's
coaching staff for the 2006 season, naming Larry Bowa as the new third-base
coach.

Bowa, 58, has been a third-base coach in the Majors for more than 12 seasons
with the Phillies (1988-96), Angels (1997-99) and Mariners (2000). He also
managed Philadelphia from 2001-04. He spent the 2005 season as a studio
analyst for ESPN.

"This might sound corny, but when I was growing up, baseball was on once a

great if you could ever wear a Yankee uniform.' When you think of baseball,
you think of the Yankees and their tradition. To get an opportunity to coach
there, I'd be foolish not to take it."

In 2001, Bowa was named National League Manager of the Year by the Baseball
Writers Association of America, The Sporting News, USA Today Baseball Weekly
and ESPN the Magazine after guiding the Phillies to their first winning
season since 1993. Bowa also managed the Padres from 1987-88.

looking forward to working with Joe and the rest of the New York Yankees."

Luis Sojo, who coached third base for the past two years, was commonly
criticized for being too aggressive and getting runners thrown out at home.
Bowa knows that the criticism is part of the job, but he's confident in his
ability.

"You're going to get people thrown out at home plate. You'll make decisions

down 3-4 runs, you have to shut it down and run one base at a time.

Bowa has never met Steinbrenner, but said he is looking forward to working
for the Boss after observing him over the years.

that like to win. He likes to win," Bowa said. "If you're a player, coach or

The Yankees still have to hire a new pitching coach to replace Mel
Stottlemyre, who announced after the playoffs that he would not return for an
11th season on Torre's staff.

Ron Guidry appears to be the front-runner to replace Stottlemyre, while Lee
Mazzilli agreed to become the replacement for former bench coach Joe Girardi

Allen has been offered a job within the organization, though he has not
decided whether to accept it. Joe Kerrigan, the former Red Sox pitching coach
