Rivera second in AL Cy Young race
Yankees closer garners three first-place votes, 68 total points

NEW YORK -- Mariano Rivera may have been the best closer in the American
League in 2005, but voters decided that he was only the league's second-best
pitcher.
Rivera finished second in the American League Cy Young Award voting, as
Angels starter Bartolo Colon captured the award for the first time in his
career.

Rivera earned 68 points to Colon's 118. The closer received eight of the 28
first-place votes, seven second-place votes and seven third-place votes,
while Colon was listed first on 17 ballots and second on 11.

Colon was the only pitcher named on all 28 ballots, while Rivera was listed

first-place votes, finishing third.

Jim Baumbach, who covers the Yankees for Newsday, gave Rivera his first-place
vote. Baumbach listed Colon second and Santana third.

"It was a very close decision on my part. I went right down to the end

dominance and value to the Yankees weighed in as a big factor for me."

Rivera is the second member of the Yankees to finish as the runner-up for a
major award in two days, as Robinson Cano finished second to Oakland's Huston
Street in AL Rookie of the Year voting on Monday.

Relievers have had trouble taking home the Cy Young, as voters tend to favor

(NL, 1989), Steve Bedrosian (NL, 1987), Willie Hernandez (AL, 1984), Rollie
Fingers (AL, 1981) and Bruce Sutter (NL, 1979).

"Looking back at the relievers who have won this award, they have always had
that dominant season," Baumbach said. "I didn't feel Mariano had that season,
per se, but I still thought his season was more impressive than, say, Colon
and Santana."

The last Yankees pitcher to win the Cy Young was Roger Clemens, who captured
the award in 2001. Five Yankees pitchers have won the Cy Young: Clemens, Rob
Guidry (1978), Sparky Lyle (1977), Whitey Ford (1961) and Bob Turley (1958).
