MINNEAPOLIS -- In an effort to upgrade a bullpen which has been hit hard by
injuries to Frank Francisco and Carlos Almanzar, the Rangers are bringing
veteran Steve Karsay into their organization.
Karsay, who was recently released by the Yankees, has decided to sign with
the Rangers. He had also been courted over the last few days by the Cubs,
Cardinals and Giants.
Rangers spokesman Gregg Elkin confirmed the Karsay deal after the Rangers'
5-2 loss to Minnesota on Sunday. "We've agreed to terms," Elkin said.
Karsay is expected to join the Rangers in Chicago on Monday and work for a
couple of days with pitching coach Orel Hershiser and the Rangers' staff. He
is then expected to be sent to Double-A Frisco and would eventually be added
to the Major League roster if he shows sufficient progress in the Texas
League.
The Rangers will only be required to pay Karsay the Major League minimum,
with the Yankees still on the hook for the bulk of his contract.
