TAMPA, Fla. -- In separate testimony, Jason Giambi and Alex Rodriguez have
touted Derek Jeter as now being "the best No. 2 hitter in baseball."
For $52 million, the Yankees bought themselves a classic leadoff man in
Johnny Damon, allowing Jeter to best utilize his inside-out swing and his
aggressive approach.
How the order stacks up after that is anyone's guess.
Twelve days before the Yankees' season begins in Oakland, manager Joe Torre
isn't any closer to drawing up his opening-night lineup than he was two
months ago.
"Because I know I won't be able to make up my mind for sure anyway," Torre
said. "You know as well as I do that it's liable to change a day later."
In Torre's view, he can't go wrong by using Gary Sheffield, Alex Rodriguez,
Hideki Matsui and Jason Giambi in any of the 3-6 slots. Switch-hitters Bernie
Williams and Jorge Posada would bat seventh or eighth, with Robinson Cano
ninth.
During the year, "It may be something I'll fiddle with," Torre said. "Things
that happen on the field can change your mind. A lot of it is feel."
Bending to tradition, left-handed hitters Giambi and Matsui would be
separated by a right-handed hitter. But Torre acknowledged that it's hardly
necessary.
Against lefties last year, Matsui batted .354 (.281 vs. RHP) while Giambi hit
.261 (.276 vs. RHP).
Sheffield has a stated preference for batting third, where he's batted .304
over the past three seasons with a .959 OPS (on-base plus slugging
percentage).
In the past three seasons, the No. 5 spot statistically has been A-Rod's best
batting position, with a .347 average and 1.189 OPS. In that same period,
Matsui's best OPS (.936) came as a No. 6 hitter, though he's mainly batted
fifth as a Yankee.
Could that leave the cleanup spot for Giambi, who led the AL in on-base
percentage (.440) last year? Or is A-Rod, who led the league in slugging
(.610) better suited there?
