http://0rz.net/fd1gH NEW YORK -- During Spring Training, Joe Torre said that the biggest challenge facing Andy Phillips this season was finding a way to stay sharp while seeing limited playing time. Entering Sunday's game, Phillips was hitting just .083, with one hit in 12 at-bats. Torre inserted him into the starting lineup on Sunday, hoping to get him going at the plate with some increased playing time this week. "It's not fair what he's been doing, so we have to find some things out," Torre said. "We have to see what we have, player-wise. The only way we expect him to help us is to find a place for him to get some at-bats on a regular basis. He's a big-league hitter, he just needs an opportunity to play." Phillips had the same issue last season, hitting just .150 in 40 at-bats over 27 games. He hit .300 with 22 home runs and 54 RBIs last season with Triple-A Columbus, playing regularly as the everyday first baseman. With Jason Giambi at first base and Bernie Williams getting most of the time as the designated hitter, there aren't many opportunities for Phillips to play, but Torre wants to get him a game or two against left-handers this week. "I don't know if we'll be able to give him the proper number of at-bats, because we can't give them to him continuously, and that's something he's used to," Torre said. "I'm trying to find out how many at-bats will make him useful to us." "It's a little transition time for me, going from playing every day to figuring out how to stay sharp," Phillips said. "The first couple of weeks, you try to figure out what the best scenario is to try to do that. It's been good to find out some different things to stay sharp." New York signed Carlos Pena, the Tigers' former first baseman, to a Minor League contract earlier this month, giving the club another alternative for its backup first baseman. Pena has a clause in his contract that allows him to become a free agent if he hasn't been called up the Majors by the end of May. Phillips isn't letting the signing of Pena bother him. He knows it's just part of the business of baseball, and that his play on the field will determine how long he stays with the club. "The one thing I have figured out is that you can't get caught up in all the things that are around, because ultimately, the organization is doing what they think can help them in any way, shape or form," he said. "The motivating factor for me is that this is an opportunity to play with the Yankees, try to be a part of something special." "I can't make him any promises, and he knows that," Torre said. "Whether Pena is or isn't in our organization, it's not going to keep him from pressing when he gets out there because he's not getting many opportunities to show us what he can do." Sheff OK: Gary Sheffield crashed into the right-field wall in the ninth inning on Sunday, but the outfielder remained in the game. Sheffield was chasing down a Jay Gibbons fly ball when he ran into the wall, banging his right knee. Torre ran on to the field with a team trainer, as well as Bernie Williams, who was set to take Sheffield's spot. "I had Bernie going out there with me, but [Sheffield] waved us off," Torre said. "He banged it, but it wasn't anything structural." Rotation rumblings: Jaret Wright will make his second start of the season on Friday night against Toronto, pushing Randy Johnson back to Saturday. Johnson has pitched on his regular five-day schedule all season, but Torre and pitching coach Ron Guidry decided last week to give the left-hander an extra day of rest for his next turn in the rotation. "We need to slot in a pitcher, so Jaret will pitch Friday," Torre said. "It was planned." Wright has made just one start this season, going just three innings against the Twins on April 12. Getting close: Aaron Small made his second rehab start on Saturday, allowing one run on seven hits in six innings. He struck out three and did not issue a walk, throwing 60 pitches. Small, who tossed four scoreless innings in his first start, on Monday, will pitch on Thursday for Triple-A Columbus, taking on Louisville. "We got a good report," Torre said. "He'll go one more, and if that's satisfying, he'll join us." Small, who has been on the disabled list since the start of the season with a strained right hamstring, will likely return to the Yankees during their next road trip. He will probably head to the bullpen as the long reliever and an emergency spot starter. "We want the option in case something happens," Torre said. "There will come a time when somebody needs an extra day or somebody is going to miss a start, so we'll need somebody to plug in." Carl Pavano threw a 71-pitch bullpen session on Saturday, and is slated to throw batting practice later this week. Golden boy: Derek Jeter received his second consecutive Gold Glove award on Sunday, accepting the trophy from a Rawlings representative before the game against the Orioles. Jeter's .979 fielding percentage was the third-best mark of his career, trailing only the .986 he posted in 1998 and .981 in 2004. The shortstop committed 15 errors in 2005, two more than during his 2004 Gold Glove campaign. Coming up: The Yankees open a three-game set against the Devil Rays on Tuesday, with Mike Mussina taking on Tampa Bay's Scott Kazmir. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET.
