It's been an interesting two weeks since my last mailbag, with one
injury after another hitting the Yankees on what seems like a
daily basis. 

自我上一個郵包後的這兩週可說是倍受矚目，一個接一個的傷兵像是每日例

Despite the loss of several guys, the Yanks have managed to keep
themselves near the top of the division, finding new and different
ways to win games. That 14-13 game was one of the most memorable I
have ever covered (and not just for the six different leads I
wrote throughout the night), while the comeback against Billy
Wagner and the Mets was as unlikely a result as you'll see this
year.

The Yankees have had their share of problems, too, most notably
the struggles of Randy Johnson and Alex Rodriguez. I know that
many fans are getting impatient with both of these players, but
it's too early to declare some of the things that I have gotten in
the mailbag, such as, "They're done, release them." Come on,
folks, you're better than that. At least I hope you are.

Why on earth would Bernie Williams start this often, even with the
injuries to Hideki Matsui and Gary Sheffield? None of his numbers
are promising, and he cannot improve. Same with Scott Erickson.

Williams is clearly no longer the player he once was, but I have
actually been impressed by his performance over the past couple of
weeks. With Sheffield and Matsui out of action, the Yankees have
to put someone out there every night, and Bernie provides
experience. 

的確他早就不是過去的那個 Williams，但是過去幾週他的表現卻令我印象
深刻。當 Sheffield 跟 Matsui 無法上陣，洋基每晚必須在外野推些人出
去的時候， Bernie 能提供經驗。

I understand why they have given Melky Cabrera a shot. Why not see
what the kid can do? Although he has looked lost on a couple of
fly balls, he has been pretty good at the plate, and that 11-pitch
walk against Wagner on Saturday was the key at-bat for the whole
comeback. Since they moved Cabrera to right field, he has looked
much better in the field, too. 

我了解他們為什麼要給 Melky Cabrera 一個機會。為什麼不看看那小子能

I would have liked to have seen Bubba Crosby get some more playing
time before his injury, but that's no longer an issue. At least
not for the next two weeks, by which time Sheffield will be back.

不需爭論了，到那時 Sheffield 將會歸隊。

Since May 1, Williams has actually hit pretty well, batting .297
with a home run and 10 RBIs. He's not going to be anchoring the
lineup any time soon, but for a No. 6 or 7 hitter, they could do
worse while they deal with all of the injuries. 

五月一號後 Williams 打的相當不錯，二成九七的打擊率，一支全壘打，十

Rodriguez had a huge slump in the playoffs last year, and it seems
to have carried into this season. Do you see a probable cause for
this, and do you think he will bounce back to his AL MVP form? Do
you believe he will post similar numbers to the red-hot Albert
Pujols by the season's end?

Brian Cashman has a theory, which I agree with, which is that most
players will finish most years with the numbers that match up to
the back of their baseball cards.

A-Rod's early-season problems may be mental, they may be
mechanical or they may be the result of him trying to hit a five-
run home run every time he steps to the plate to make up for his
injured teammates not being there. 

A-Rod開季的麻煩可能是心理的，可能是技巧的或者是肇因於他站上打擊區
時想替他受傷而不在的隊友打出五分全壘打。

However, we're one-quarter of the way into the season, and A-Rod
is on pace for 36 home runs and 120 RBIs ... and that's with a
terrible start. I fully expect Rodriguez to go on one of those hot
streaks where he hits eight homers and drives in 20 runs in 10
games, where he carries the offense on his back. He will hit over
.300 for the year, even though he's at .270 right now.

Unfortunately, if it doesn't come against the Red Sox, no one will
care. Such is life for A-Rod.

Scott Proctor has almost certainly been the Yankees' best surprise
of the year and is now one of the "go to" guys in the Yankees'
bullpen. Do you think that he has the stuff to remain dominant
through the whole season?

The only reason that I can think of why Proctor wouldn't be able
to perform on a consistent basis throughout the season would be
overuse, which has been an issue in the past couple of years with
guys like Tanyon Sturtze and Tom Gordon. 

我所能想出唯一如果 Proctor 無法整季持續穩定演出的原因─他被過度使
用。過去幾年討論到像是 Tanyon Sturtze 與 Tom Gordon 那樣的投手時都
有相同的爭論。

As long as Proctor can keep his arm fresh and not go through the
tired-arm period that those other two guys did, he should be fine.

會的。

I think one thing working in his favor will be the return of
Octavio Dotel. Once Dotel is back, Joe Torre can use Dotel,
Proctor and Kyle Farnsworth to pitch the seventh and eighth
innings, giving each of them days off when needed. 

我想 Octavio Dotel 的歸隊也能幫他一把，當 Dotel 回來，Joe Torre 能
再第七、八局用上 Dotel、 Proctor 跟 Kyle Farnsworth ，而能給每個人

the upper hand.

Yes, the 2004 ALCS was clearly a disaster for the Yankees, but
last season, New York won the season series, 10-9. That was the
reason the Yankees won the American League East by virtue of a
tiebreaker. 

沒錯， 2004 美聯冠軍戰的確對洋基是災難，但是上個球季洋基以 10-9 贏
了系列賽，這個對戰優勢讓洋基贏得美聯東區冠軍。

The Sox have taken three of the first four this season entering
this week's series, but to say they have "owned" the Yankees just
isn't accurate. And of course, both teams were eliminated in the
first round last year, so neither had the upper hand on that one. 

紅襪贏了今年四場對戰中的三場，憑這要說紅襪凌駕洋基一點都不中肯。兩
隊只打完了今年的第一回合，所以誰也沒佔上風。

From the Yankees mailbag, dated Feb. 20, 2006:

Q: Do you think it's a little disconcerting that Carl Pavano is
   already hurt? Is there any way to buy out his contract? He's
   obviously got more problems than everyone thought and was a
   mistake in the first place. 

問：你覺得 Carl Pavano 的受傷是不是個小小挫敗？有沒有辦法買斷他的
    合約？他很明顯的製造了比任何人所能想像還多的麻煩，而他打從來
    這就是個徹底的錯誤。

A: It's a good thing that people aren't overreacting to this.

答：鄉民還沒對這件事發起暴動實在是太棒了。

So ... with Johnson finally starting to look his age and Pavano
once again having to have surgery, do you think that Yankee Nation
can now start to think about a trade for Dontrelle Willis, who is
languishing in Florida? Or, are we Yankee fans still
"overreacting"?

First of all, Mike, it's always nice to see people digging up past
writings of mine to call me on it. However, to be fair, let's see
what the rest of my answer was that day:

首先， Mike ，看到有人深究我之前寫的而使我重新回到該議題總是好的，

Pavano certainly didn't live up to his billing in his first year
with the Yankees, battling inconsistency and shoulder problems in
the first half before missing the second half. And while he came
to camp with a healthy arm, his back has been barking a little,
prompting a specialist to prescribe a couple of weeks without
throwing off the mound. 

Pavano 顯然並沒把在洋基的第一年當一回事，整年肩膀的問題層出不窮。
而當他終於有條健康的手臂，他的背又發出微微異響，使的專家開出幾週不
須上投手丘的藥方。

That said, let's not bury this guy just yet. He is still just 29
years old and if these two weeks of conditioning manage to fix the
back problem, he could still be a productive starter for the
Yankees. 

那代表著，我們還不能把這傢伙抬去埋了。他才29歲而且如果在幾週的訓練
後修復好背傷，他也許還能替洋基擔當先發投手。

As for getting rid of his contract, the answer is no. The Yankees
could try to trade him, but his trade value is not very high at
the moment and the team would have to eat a good portion of his
salary. Unless you were getting something of value back, I
wouldn't deal him just yet. 

至於擺脫他的肥約這檔事，答案是否定的。洋基可以試著交易他，但是當時
他的價值並不高而且必須吃下大部分的合約，除非能在他身上挖點有用的回
來，否則我將不會交易他。

Let's give Pavano a second year to show that he can live up to his
contract before calling his signing a mistake.

Now, with Pavano set for surgery on his elbow and his 2006 season
in doubt, it's pretty easy to say that his signing was a mistake.
But that's all second-guessing. I can't kill Cashman for the
signing, because six or seven other teams wanted to give him the
same money -- if not more. 

現在，當 Pavano 確定進行肘部手術而他的 2006 看來要報銷了，這時就可
以很簡單的說簽他是個錯誤，但那已是事後諸葛了。我不能因為這個合約而

As for Johnson, I'm not ready to bury him yet, either. He went
through the same struggles in the first half last year and went on
to have a terrific second half. Will he do it again? I have no
idea. But even if he's no longer a dominant ace, he's certainly
still a No. 2 or 3 starter at worst. 

至於 Johnson ，我也還沒準備要挖苦他。去年前半段他也陷入同樣的麻煩
而下半季他有很優秀的表現。他會重演一次嗎？我不知道。但即使他不再是

And yes, you're still overreacting. The first 40 games of the
season (with the exception of Mike Mussina) have gone as badly as
they could have thought, yet the Yankees are 1 1/2 games out of
first place as of Monday. Willis' price tag will be steep, and I
wouldn't want to see the Yankees mortgage the future by trading
guys like Eric Duncan and Philip Hughes for him. 

最後，是的，你們依然反應過度了。球季已打了四十場(扣掉 Mike Mussina)
再壞的狀況都撐過啦，當週一時洋基離首位還有 1.5場勝差， Willis 的標
價會將貼在上面，而我將不願見到洋基抵押像是 Eric Duncan 跟 Philip
Hughes 這樣的未來新秀好換來他。

Besides, are you sure you want to bring another Marlins pitcher
here?
