Mussina beats pain, AL opponents
Yankees right-hander continues to refine his approach

Imagine walking around with a toothache in your elbow and then trying to
pitch through the pain, conducting a futile and frustrating search for the
smooth motion and mechanics that once came so naturally.

想像一下在你的手肘裡面有一顆牙在痛，然後設法在疼痛中投球，

For the last two seasons, Mike Mussina did just that. There were periodic
trips to the disabled list, a roller coaster ride when the pain would
subside for a while, then mysteriously reappear. He missed nine weeks over
the last two years, including being shut down for three weeks last September
in the heat of a division race -- not a good time for him or the
New York Yankees.

The pain was so severe, he said, that just touching the elbow could bring

It was a pretty scary situation as he approached the age of 37 and was
entering the last year of his contract. Mussina was at a crossroads
last winter. His solution: Do nothing.

There was no offseason throwing or weightlifting program until almost
December, a month later than normal. He rested his arm and his elbow
and came into Spring Training in ideal shape with a specific plan.
He had a solid spring and it has carried over into the regular season.

With more than 3,000 innings over 15-plus seasons, Mussina has continued
to refine his approach to the task of getting hitters out. Always a
thinking man's pitcher, he's become even more cerebral on the mound in
recent years.

Drafted out of Stanford, where he earned a degree in economics in
3 1/2 years, he came up with Baltimore in 1991, equipped with the usual
pitches -- fastball, curveball and changeup. To them, he has added a slider
and a splitter. That's five pitches, joined by an occasional knuckle curve,
and he throws all of them for strikes. He changes speeds and delivery angles.
That's a lot of possibilities for a hitter to consider.

Mussina loves having that range of options. He wants batters wondering what
might come next.

"That's all I'm trying to do," he said. "Make the hitter think so much that
he can't hit."

It's easier to do when he's pain-free, the way he has started this season.

"You always hope that everything's going to be good," he said. "My last

This one was. He posted a 2.31 ERA in April, and in his last three starts,
allowed just three earned runs, a 1.40 ERA. There were seven strikeouts in
each of those wins, pushing his career total to 2,437, most for active
American League pitchers.

Typical was a 9-1 April victory over Tampa Bay. Touched up for a first-inning
homer by Jonny Gomes, Mussina gave the Devil Rays very little else. He retired
10 straight batters after the homer.

"I threw the ball in and out and changed speeds," Mussina said. "I kept them
off balance as best I could. I've been pretty consistent with my stuff and
locating my pitches, using all my pitches and throwing them for strikes."

In his final April start, he beat Toronto in much the same fashion. The
Blue Jays loaded the bases against him in the fifth inning and he ended
the threat by striking out Shea Hillenbrand, who was 13-for-18 going into
the game.

Mussina is among the top 10 active pitchers in wins and strikeouts. Last
season, he became the 20th pitcher to win 10 or more games for 14 straight
seasons, trailing only Greg Maddux (18 straight) among active pitchers.
He's also won at least nine games before the All-Star Game 12 times,
tying Steve Carlton for the most such seasons since the Midsummer Classic
began in 1933.

of 230 career victories and 2,500 strikeouts and there's no reason to believe
he won't reach them -- provided that toothache stays out of his elbow.
