Wang Helps Ease the Yankees' Pain

The mood seemed somewhat subdued at Yankee Stadium last night, even as the
Yankees defeated the Oakland Athletics, 2-0. It was partly because of a key
injury to the home team, which played without left-fielder Hideki Matsui for
the first time in more than three seasons. Perhaps the dank weather also had
something to do with the reduced excitement level.

即使Yankees昨晚以2-0擊敗A's，Yankee Stadium的氣氛似乎有點平靜。一部分是因為打

Another reason might have been that opposition for the weekend, the A's, who
are not quite as compelling a matchup as the Boston Red Sox, who played the
three previous nights with first place at stake in the American League East.

Still, you never know in baseball when you might see a good, tight,
delightful game. Good pitching can bring everything into focus and make
fielders look sharp, and that was the case last night as Chien-Ming Wang of
the Yankees dueled Barry Zito of Oakland.

The Yankees prevailed on solo home runs by Alex Rodriguez and Bernie
Williams. Rodriguez broke a scoreless tie by leading off the sixth inning
with a home run to left-center on a low changeup from Zito to give the

It was the second time in three games that Rodriguez had hit a game-winning
homer.

"My hands are coming alive," Rodriguez said. "It was refreshing to get a
good, tight game. You got the feeling one run would do the difference."

Williams made the score 2-0 with a homer to left field with two outs in the
eighth against former Yankee Randy Keisler, who threw him a slider. It was
Williams's second home run of the season and earned him a curtain call from
the fans.

"Bernie's special," Torre said. "Just the way he carries himself. He's a
leader and he doesn't even know it.

Wang worked eight innings and allowed three hits but was relieved at the
beginning of the ninth by closer Mariano Rivera. The game was played in 2
hours and 28 minutes, considerably less than the 3:59 it took for the Red Sox
to beat the Yankees, 5-3, in nine innings Thursday.

"My infielders were really good," Wang said. "They caught a lot of hoppers. I

The Yankees were without Matsui, who underwent a successful operation on his
left wrist yesterday after fracturing it Thursday night while trying to make
a catch against Boston. Matsui is expected to miss at least three months. In

up Kevin Reese, an outfielder, to fill Matsui's roster spot.

The air was chilly and damp last night and both starting pitchers worked at a
brisk pace. Zito, a left-hander who is one of baseball's more artistic
pitchers, mixed fastballs, changeups and sliders with his trademark, the
curve.

Wang, a right-hander who throws sinkers, got the A's to hit the ball onto the
ground and induced them into four double plays in the first seven innings.
Zito had control problems in the fifth and loaded the bases on a single and
two walks before retiring Jason Giambi on a deep fly to center.

Zito left after six innings, trailing 1-0, after giving up five hits, walking
four and striking out four.

"That's the best he's thrown all year," Rodriguez said of Wang.

Torre pointed out that the fast pace brought out the best in the fielders,
especially in the top of the eighth, when second baseman Robinson Canó made
a backhanded stab of Adam Melhuse's grounder up the middle.

Canó stopped, leaped into the air and threw to first base, where Andy
Phillips scooped the ball an instant ahead of the runner to get the putout.

Rivera, smiling, said: "You need to pitch and play good defense. You will go
far."

Jason Giambi had a stolen base for the Yankees last night, his first of the
season. Without the hard-hitting Hideki Matsui and the injured Gary Sheffield
in the lineup, the Yankees are looking to play more small ball than usual.
Joe Torre said Giambi had permission to go whenever he was not being held on
first.

昨晚Giambi完成了他本季第一次盜壘，似乎由於Matsui和sheffield兩位強打者的缺陣
Yankees要玩更多小球戰術了。Torre表示在一壘手不守壘包的時候，Giambi可以做一
