Yankees pull out unlikely win
Everything pointed to a loss for the Bombers, until the ninth
Baseball Perspectives
Mike Bauman
NEW YORK -- It is generally difficult to describe any victory by the New York
Yankees as "unlikely." Their history largely defines victory as the likeliest
of outcomes.
But the Yankees' victory at Shea Stadium Saturday afternoon would qualify as
unlikely. Or improbable. Or almost out of the question for the vast majority
of the day.
Yes, Game 2 of the Subway Series was clearly going to the New York Mets, just
as Game 1 had. Obviously, the fundamental order of Big Apple baseball was
rapidly changing.
Pedro Martinez stopped the Yanks cold for seven innings. The "who's your
Daddy?" thing was ancient history. Pedro was now the parent in this
relationship, giving up just four hits, one walk, and no runs, striking out
eight.
Pedro Martinez
Mike Mussina wasn't bad, but he didn't have much help. The Yankees committed
four errors, two of which, in the first inning, led to two unearned runs.
What was the deal with the Yanks in the field? In the first 28 games of the
season, they committed just 10 errors. In the last 13 games they have
committed 22 errors.
Mike Mussina
Going into the ninth, the Yanks were trailing, 4-0, and closer Billy Wagner
was brought in for the Mets. His appearance was almost gratuitous, not even
being a save situation. You could not help but recall what Wagner had done
Friday night, striking out the side in the top of the ninth, overpowering the
middle of the Yankees' order. Clearly, this one was over. Have you got
everything, kids? It's time to go home.
Billy Wagner
There were other factors headed in the direction away from a Yankee victory.
The Yanks had three outfielders, two starters and a backup on the disabled
list, but that was just a slice of their pain. Jorge Posada and Bernie
Williams, for instance, were nicked up and not in the starting lineup.
Manager Joe Torre said he had joked to general manager Brian Cashman Friday
night: "What kind of club are you giving me?"
No, at no point during the vast majority of the event did this seem to be a
Bronx Bombers afternoon. "It was an ugly game for a long time," Torre said.
But then it turned out that the Yankees were still the Yankees, and not
merely supporting players in the Mets' rise to prominence. Wagner faced seven
Yankees. Six of them reached.
Wagner
Single, walk, run-scoring single, fly to center, walk, run-scoring walk,
run-scoring hit-by-pitch. The Yankees battled on every pitch, and Wagner had
to throw 31 of them before he departed. Melky Cabrera put up a particularly
impressive fight with an 11-pitch at-bat before reaching base on a walk with
what would eventually become the tying run.
"A wonderful at-bat, spectacular," Torre said.
Wagner, 292 career saves and all, was forced to depart. Left-hander Pedro
Feliciano came in to face Johnny Damon with the bases loaded, one out, in a
4-3 game. Damon's subsequent groundball to short seemed, like most of what
had previously occurred on this afternoon, to be just what the Mets' wanted.
This would be the game-ending double play, and if it had been a bit dicey
there at the end, the Mets would still win round one of the 2006 Subway Series.
Pedro Feliciano
But no. Damon went as hard as he could go and narrowly beat the throw from
second, thus allowing the tying run to score.
"You watch Johnny Damon, whether it's good or bad, he's always running hard,"
Torre said.
"I've still got the wheels that a lot of people thought left me," Damon said
with a smile.
Andy Phillips, in the game on a 10th-inning double switch, singles in the
winning run in the 11th inning. Again, this is not exactly the premier
candidate for Yankee heroics, but the question with these Yankees is not who,
but how.
"I know the lineup is not as star-studded now, but the guys that are in there
still have confidence in what they can do as players," Phillips said.
Mariano Rivera, the losing pitcher the previous night, shuts down the Mets
for the last two innings. And, here's a way to get even, he strikes out the
side in the 11th to nail down the victory.
The Yankees win, 5-4. How? They might still be the Yankees. Even in these
distinctly less-than-likely circumstances. How unlikely was this one?
"This one was maybe even more unlikely than the one the other day [against
Texas], when we were losing by nine runs," Torre said. "In the 10-1 game, we
were getting a run here, a run there. Here, nothing."
All of the excuses were in place for the Yankees on Saturday. They were beat
up, they were facing one of the most dominant pitchers of this generation,
they were down early and often. But they still had the essential Yankee ethic.
"It may not be pretty, but they're never going to quit," Torre said of his
club's effort in this game. "That's a testament to what we need to do here.
It's what you need to have if you expect to contend and compete."
The Yankees still had it Saturday, even when most of the day it looked as
though they didn't have much at all. Implausible, improbable, unlikely, all
of that and more, but at the end of the day it was Yankees 5, Mets 4.
"The whole thing with this game is trying to win and not trying to explain
why you can't," Torre said.
That is what the New York Yankees were still about on this May afternoon in
Queens.
