Unit feels he still has right stuff

Joe Torre approached Randy Johnson a few days ago and told him that he planned
to give him the ball every five days, adding, "Whatever it looks like is what
it is."

What it looked like once again last night was nothing more than a 42-year-old
former ace still without the slightest of answers. But at least the Big Unit
finally bared his soul after he'd blown a four-run lead - and left a 6-all
game after five more mediocre innings - as the Mets eventually won, 7-6, in
the ninth at Shea.
昨晚這位42歲的前王牌投手第一局搞砸洋基四分的領先 還有平庸的五局
總結送上六分 最後大都會以7比6贏了這場比賽
而又一次 大個兒沒找到任何解答  但這次至少坦誠了他的靈魂

"I'm not going to (B.S.) you guys, I'm too old, I've been around too long,
and I'm not going to (B.S.) you," Johnson said near the end of his postgame
press briefing. "I'm not too old, and my stuff's not that bad. . . . Just go
and ask the Mets players.

"But I'm not dominating the way I (have) and that's disappointing. If I've
never dominated in this game, then I wouldn't have anything to balance off of

"It's frustrating to go out there and give it up the last four-five starts,
or five-six starts in a row, when I haven't done that over four or five years
at my best time. It's a very humbling game and I'm humbled, and I always have
been.

"But I'm not going to quit, either. I'm not a quitter. I've gone through a
lot of adversity, too. I've come back from surgeries; I've dealt with a lot
of things. I know my teammates need me and I need them and I'll continue to
battle and to pitch."

Johnson couldn't even outpitch Jeremi Gonzalez last night, even after the
journeyman had spotted the Yanks four runs in the top of the first. Johnson
surrendered a three-run homer to Carlos Beltran in the bottom half, and then
a two-run, opposite-field homer to Xavier Nady for a 5-5 game in the third.

After the Yanks had provided him with yet another lead, Johnson failed to put
away Kaz Matsui in the fifth after getting ahead 1-2 in the count. Matsui
stroked a full-count RBI single to make it 6-6, and Johnson was done for the
night after completing the inning.
後來隊友又追加比分取得領先 但第五局RJ沒辦法在兩好一壞時解決小松井
最後被他在滿球數時敲出帶打點的一壘安打 追成6-6平手
也就在那局RJ投完下班

"The stuff is there. People can say what they want and will say what they
want. But I'm convinced the stuff is there. . . . I'm just not getting the
job done right now," Johnson said. "If I had the answers I wouldn't be doing
what I'm doing.
他說"stuff還在 人們愛說什麼就說什麼 但我相信stuff還在 只是我現在沒辦法做好
如果我有解答 就不會是現在這樣"

"I'm not throwing 97-to-100 miles an hour, but I'm still at 94-95 and I still
have good enough stuff to get batters out."
"我現在投不出97-100MPH 但也還有94-95 這應該足夠解決打者"

The numbers, of course, suggest otherwise. Excluding a 7-1 win over Baltimore
on April 23, Johnson has been ripped for 30 earned runs in 29 2/3 innings in
the other six of his last seven starts - adding up to an astounding 9.10 ERA.

"He just didn't look particularly comfortable out there tonight," Torre said.
"I feel frustrated for Randy because I know he's trying to find this thing,
and we'll just have to wait for five days from now."
